INFORMATION TECHNOLOGY APPLICATION IN EDUCATION • Information technology; an industry that uses computers, network, software programming and other equipment and process to store, retrieve, transmit and protect information. • 1. History; the principal function of information technology in education is the preservation of knowledge in a form that is durable, accessible, searchable and easily updated. For the last half-millennium, books have been the technology of choice, but they are clearly limited in several key respects: their durability is challenged by fire and mold, they are only accessible to individuals who are physically present, the ability to search their contents is limited by the quality of the index and the only way to update them is to create more of them. By contrast, digital information technology surpasses books in every way: the information may be saved in countless places and formats, the Internet allows universal access and search ability and an update is as simple as a hyperlink. The advantages of contemporary information technology for education are truly revolutionary.

  4. 2.Presentation Technology • Contemporary information technology has also revolutionized the classroom experience. Although nothing can replace the master-disciple relationship, the modern Internet-enabled classroom allows the instructor the possibility of providing immediate access to worldwide data sources to students. Software such as PowerPoint simplifies lectures and allows the inclusion of key illustrations, and when coupled with online video and audio resources, students can virtually travel the globe to visit historical sites, view surgical procedures in process and consult with experts. Smart board technology even allows students access to exact replicas of notes written down by the instructor for later reference.

  5. 3.Supervising Student Research • Student research skills are also challenged by modern information technology. Before the advent of the Internet, teachers assigned research projects to students based largely on the data available to them--usually print resources in local libraries. Although this was far from an exhaustive data set, teachers evaluated student progress on the depth of the research rather than its scope, since access to more exhaustive resources was unattainable. With the Internet, however, students have access to far more information than they can properly process, and research skills have shifted from simply finding information to the more nuanced evaluation of available information. In other words, the last generation of students--now teachers themselves--were trained in how to dig for information in far-off archives and databases, presenting each finding as an individual nugget of value. Their students, however, can comb through these information sources with a few clicks of the keyboard, but they gather so much information that the emphasis has to be placed on learning what data can safely be discarded.

  6. 4.Benefits • The benefits of modern information technology are obvious, with students able to access a degree and quality of information that could only be dreamed of by scholars in previous generations. Internet access to data seems unlimited, and teachers can easily direct students to new voyages of discovery, both in the classroom and in their research projects.

  7. 5.Warning • The increasing access to data, however, has a very dark side as well. The economic cost of producing information was once very high: years of research coupled with a significant investment by a university publisher resulted in a journal article or book, which would be purchased by a library and stored in optimal conditions for many years of use. Now, anyone with access to a computer can start a blog and place information on the Internet, regardless of its veracity, and students must learn to distinguish useful from useless information. The ease of replication, moreover, has dulled student's sensitivity to issues of plagiarism, as cut-and-paste essays are only a few keystrokes away. Ironically, the access to such large amounts of information has the potential of actually dulling the learning process.

  8. ; 6.Computers help student to manage their studies for; • Ease of Access to Information The Internet has changed the way students learn by how quickly both teachers and students can access information. The Internet more or less contains everything a person would want to know about a certain subject. Students can easily do research that would have taken days with traditional methods. Teachers can also find out the latest developments in a field they are lecturing on and give students current information as opposed to relying on dated textbooks.

  9. 7.Multimedia • The Internet allows students and educators to access multimedia content that is not possible to view through other mediums. Students can learn about their subjects by seeing video, pictures and audio. This allows the student to gain a much deeper perspective on what they are studying. For example, a biology student may know a whale is a large mammal, but until he sees a video of a blue whale next to a diver, he may not fully appreciate just how powerful the animal is.

  10. 8.Communication • The Internet also allows students to communicate with each other more easily. Students are able to share information via email, instant message and file transfers. This aids tremendously with group project work. Students can conference remotely with each other, working together advancing the project as if they were all together in the same room. This increases efficiency in the students' work and allows students to learn communication skills that they will likely need in the workplace.

  11. 9.Online Learning Environment • Many educators have course websites where they publish lessons, lectures, resources, notes and other topics related to the course for students. Online learning spaces also can allow students to ask questions and post discussion topics in forums where both the educators and students can discuss.

  12. 10.Working from Home • Many post-secondary institutions and some K to 12 schools are broadcasting their lectures on the Internet so that students who may not be able to attend the lesson can at least watch from home. Students can access these saved lectures later on. This aids students in studying for exams, as they can download the lectures and review any unclear topics.
