Welcome Remarksby Mark Covin Director of Recruitment, Outreach & Admissions • Purpose: Share with all of you specific information regarding the Bachelor of Science Nursing program for high school seniors and transfer students. • Pre-licensure full time program that will allows graduates to take the licensing exam to be certified as a Registered Nurse in any state.

Bachelor of Science • Designed for high school and transfer students who wish to enter the nursing profession. • Four year full time program that also includes general courses the first two years, nursing specific courses the last two years for Freshmen. Total Three year full time program for Transfer students. • UCLA classes are quarter system based which is 10 weeks, there are a total of 14 quarters for Freshman and 10 quarters for Transfers. • Total of 50 student per year will be admitted as Freshmen and 10 Transfers students per year.

Goals of the Programs • Educate and provide a new workforce of RN’s. • Graduate clinical nurses who will be prepared to work in a variety of different health care settings. • Who will be prepared to deal with high acuity/high tech healthcare settings. • Partnership with other affiliates: UCLA Medical Center, WW & SM Cedars-Sinai Medical Center St. John’s Medical Center Children’s Hospital, LA Veteran’s –West LA Torrance Memorial Medical Center Hospital of the Good Samaritan Northridge Medical Center

  13. Time Commitment • Time commitment for students studying at UCLA: • For each unit taken, 3 hours of work can be expected (in and out of the classroom). • Therefore, 14 units = 42 hours of time devoted to studies in and outside the classroom.

Statement of Purpose Clear statement of your goals Here are a few things that reviewers look for: • Why you want to be a nurse – write from your heart • Your self assessment for success (at the University and in Nursing) • Your goals for a nursing career (we want to know if you have a goal – and we know this can often change) • Multicultural experiences, diversity (should include examples) • Bilingual ability (describe your level and how you achieved this) • Examples of responding to challenges or adversity (e.g. being the first generation in your family to attend college, overcoming specific hardships, etc.) • Accomplishments – make sure they are also in your resume • Leadership activities and qualities • 2-3 pages, double spaced

  17. Letter of RecommendationsTotal of 2 • Two References are required on SON form • Teacher, Counselor and/or Supervisor • Professional person who has had a supervisory, educational, or mentoring relationship • No family or personal friends • DEADLINE JANUARY 29, 2020

  18. Work/Volunteer Experience • Resume = Highlights of work experience, volunteer work and/or extracurricular activities. • Need dates of activities with brief description. • Limit to two pages in chronological order beginning with the most recent. • Resume Writing Resources – Major bookstores, websites such as monster.com or hotjobs.com
