We have been using SpeX to construct an infrared spectral library of stars. The library has two main uses: • Infrared classification of optically embedded and cool stars • Infrared population synthesis studies When complete the IRTF Spectral Library will contain several hundred stars sampled across most of the HR diagram. The first part of the library consisting of FGKM stars is now available on the IRTF website (paper in preparation). OBA stars and Wolf-Rayet stars will be released soon.
IRTF Spectral Library: FGKM stars • Sample size ~ 200 stars with optical MK classification • 0.8-2.4 m all stars, majority 0.8-5.0 m • R=2000 at 0.8-2.4 m, R= 2500 at 2.4-5.0 m • S/N ~ 100 typical (except in poor telluric regions) • Spectra are flux calibrated
Example: K5 I, III, V luminosity sequence Y-band L-band K-band
