Juan 1:19 - 28

1. Juan1:19 - 28 19 Este es el testimonio de Juan, cuando los judíos enviaron sacerdotes y levitas de Jerusalén a preguntarle: ¿Quién eres tú?

2. 20 Y él confesó y no negó; confesó: Yo no soy el Cristo. 21 Y le preguntaron: ¿Entonces, qué? ¿Eres Elías? Y él dijo: No soy. ¿Eres el profeta? Y respondió: No.

3. 22 Entonces le dijeron: ¿Quién eres?, para que podamos dar respuesta a los que nos enviaron. ¿Qué dices de ti mismo? 23 Él dijo: Yo soy LA VOZ DEL QUE CLAMA EN EL DESIERTO: “ENDEREZAD EL CAMINO DEL SEÑOR”, como dijo el profeta Isaías.

4. 24 Los que habían sido enviados eran de los fariseos. 25 Y le preguntaron, y le dijeron: Entonces, ¿por qué bautizas, si tú no eres el Cristo, ni Elías, ni el profeta? 26 Juan les respondió, diciendo: Yo bautizo en agua, pero entre vosotros está Uno a quien no conocéis.

5. 27 Él es el que viene después de mí, a quien yo no soy digno de desatar la correa de su sandalia. 28 Estas cosas sucedieron en Betania, al otro lado del Jordán, donde Juan estaba bautizando. Palabra del Señor

7. John1:19 - 28 19 And this is the testimony of John. When the Jews from Jerusalem sent priests and Levites (to him) to ask him, “Who are you?”

8. 20 he admitted and did not deny it, but admitted, “I am not the Messiah.” 21 So they asked him, “What are you then? Are you Elijah?” And he said, “I am not.” “Are you the Prophet?” He answered, “No.”

9. 22 So they said to him, “Who are you, so we can give an answer to those who sent us? What do you have to say for yourself?” 23 He said: “I am the voice of one crying out in the desert, ‘Make straight the way of the Lord,’ as Isaiah the prophet said.”

10. 24 Some Pharisees were also sent. 25 They asked him, “Why then do you baptize if you are not the Messiah or Elijah or the Prophet?” 26 John answered them, “I baptize with water; but there is one among you whom you do not recognize,

11. 27 the one who is coming after me, whose sandal strap I am not worthy to untie.” 28 This happened in Bethany across the Jordan, where John was baptizing. Gospel of the Lord

13. Reflections on John 1:19 - 28 Reflexiónes en Juan 1:19 - 28 by Fr. Sam Rosales, S.J. Jan. 2, 2008 Today is the feast of St. Basil (329-379). He was born in Caesarea. As a young man in his 20’s he resolved to devote his life to God. In a letter (n. 223) he wrote:

15. “I had wasted much time on follies and spent nearly all my youth in vain labors, and devotion to a teaching of wisdom that God had made foolish. Suddenly I awoke as out of a deep sleep. I beheld the wonderful light of the Gospel truth…I shed a flood of tears over my wretched life, and I prayed for a guide who might form in me the principles of piety.”

16. “Yo había gastado mucho tiempo en tonterías y gaste casi toda mi juventud en trabajos vanos, y en devoción a la enseñanza de una sabiduría que Dios había hecho tontería. Repentinamente desperté como de un sueño profundo. Mire la maravillosa luz de la verdad del evangelio...Tuve un derrame de lagrimas por mi miserable vida, y pedí por un guía que formara en mi los principios de la piedad.”

17. He was baptized, and then set out to seek spiritual guidance from the ascetics in the desert. Upon returning home he gave his wealth to the poor, and returned to live austerely in the desert. Soon others were attracted to him for guidance, and out of that grew the monastic movement in the east. We pray for his intercession, that we may follow his example.

18. Fue bautizado, y entonces salió a buscar dirección espiritual de los ascéticos en el desierto. Al regresar a casa entregó sus posesiones a los pobres, y regresó a vivir austeramente en el desierto. 19. St. Gregory of Naciaceno (330-389) joined Basil in the desert. He was made Bishop, and eventually Archbishop of Constantinople. But he detested controversy, and regularly retired to a life of solitude. In praise of St. Basil he wrote:

20. San Gregorio de Naciaceno (330-389) se unió con Basilio en el desierto. Fue hecho Obispo, y con el tiempo Arzobispo de Constantinóple. Pero no le gustaba la controversia, y regularmente se retiraba a la vida de soledad. Alabando a San Basilio escribió:

21. “Our single object and ambition was virtue, and a life of hope in the blessings that are to come; we wanted to withdraw from this world before we departed from it. With that end in view we ordered our lives and all our actions.” (Sermon 43). Let us do the same.

23. These two saints followed the example of John the Baptist. When asked who he was he admitted: “I am the voice of one crying out in the desert, ‘Make straight the way of the Lord’.

24. Estos dos santos siguieron el ejemplo de San Juan Bautista. Cuando le preguntaron que quien era él admitió: “Yo soy la voz de uno que grita en el desierto, ‘Aplánenle el camino al Señor’.

25. I baptize with water; but there is one among you whom you do not recognize, the one who is coming after me, whose sandal strap I am not worthy to untie.” This was the greatest of the Old Testament prophets. When he found Jesus he said: “He must increase, I must decrease.” (John 3.30).

26. Yo bautizo con agua; pero hay uno entre ustedes quien no conocen, aquel que ha de venir después de mí, cuya sandalia no soy digno de desatar.” Este fue el más grande de los profetas del Antiguo Testamento. Cuando encontró a Jesús dijo: “El tiene que aumentar, y yo tengo que disminuir” (Juan 3.30).

27. From his very first words John the Baptist hints he is about to disappear and allow his disciples to follow Jesus the Christ. “Look there, behold the Lamb of God, who takes away the sins of the world. This is he…who baptizes with the Holy Spirit” (John 1.29ff.).

28. Desde sus primeras palabras Juan Bautista da a entender que esta por desaparecer y permitir que sus discípulos sigan a Cristo. “He aquí, mirar al Cordero de Dios, que quita los pecados del mundo. Este es él...que bautiza con el Espíritu Santo” (Juan 1.29ff).

29. He also said: “I am not the Christ, but have been sent before him. He who has the bride is the bridegroom; the friend of the bridegroom, who stands and hears him, rejoices greatly at the bridegroom’s voice; therefore this joy of mine is now full.” (John 3.28-30). “Joia! Algeria!”

30. También dijo: “No soy el Cristo, sino que fui mandado ante él. El que tiene la novia es el novio; el amigo del novio, que esta cerca y lo oye, regocija grandemente al oír su voz; por eso mi gozo ahora es pleno “ (Juan 3.28-30). ¡Joia! ¡Alegria!

31. Let us remember holy St. John the Baptist, who taught us how to rejoice. This happens when we let God be God, and get out of the way! Didn’t someone say: “Lead, follow, or get out of the way?” Yes.

32. Vamos a recordar a San Juan Bautista, que nos enseñó como regocijar. Sucede cuando dejamos a Dios ser Dios. No nos entremetemos, sino que nos hacemos a un lado. ¿Qué no dijo alguien: “Dirige, sigue, o hágase a un lado? ¡Si!
