Definition • Semiotics studies or semiology • Is the study of signs and sign processes (semiosis). • Indication, designation, likeness, analogy, metaphor, symbolism, signification and communication
Branches • Semantics • Syntactics • Pragmatics
Semantics • Relation between signs and the things to which they refer; their meaning. • Deals with the relation of signs to their designata(something that is referred to in a linguistic expression) and the objects which they may or do denote.
Syntactics • Relations among signs in formal structures. • It deals with the formal properties of signs and symbols. • Deals with the “rules that govern how words are combined to form phrases and sentences.
Pragmatics • Relation between signs and the effects they have on the people who use them. • Deals with the biotic aspects of semiosis. All the psychological, biological and sociological phenomena which occur in the functioning of signs.
Terminology • Comes from the Greek (semeiotikos), meaning observant of signs and from (semeion) which in turn stands for “a sign, a mark”.
Example • "'Commonsense' suggests that 'I' am a unique individual with a stable, unified identity and ideas of my own. Semiotics can help us to realize that such notions are created and maintained by our engagement with sign systems: our sense of identity is established through signs. We derive a sense of 'self' from drawing upon conventional, pre-existing repertoires of signs and codes . . .. We are thus the subjects of our sign systems rather than being 'users' who are fully in control of them."(Daniel Chandler, Semiotics: The Basics, Routledge, 2006)
