  1. Construction on Jurong Region Line Stations Will Start in Q2 2021 The Jurong Region Line (JRL) is an elevated Mass Rapid Transit (MRT) line that will serve the western part of Singapore, connecting Choa Chu Kang, Jurong Pier, Peng Kang Hill, and Pandan Reservoir regions. It will be the seventh MRT line which will open in stages from 2027. The Land Transport Authority (LTA) announced recently that the construction works on four MRT stations on the Jurong Region Line are going to start in the second quarter of 2021. Construction of Stations on the JRL Line LTA has awarded two civil contracts for the construction of stations on the JRL line. The first contract has been awarded to a joint venture between China Civil Engineering Construction and local company SCB for the design and construction of Jurong Hill and Jurong Pier stations. The first contract is valued at S$263 million and involves the construction of a 1.1km viaduct between the two stations along with the construction of stations. The second contract has been awarded to Hwa Seng Builder which values at S$263 million. The contract involves the design and construction of Nanyang Gateway and Nanyang Crescent stations along with a 1.4km viaduct between the stations. “The JRL will put 60,000 more households within a 10-minute walk from a train station. As key residential areas such as Tengah new town develop over time, more households will benefit from the JRL in future,” LTA said. More Details About the JRL Line The JRL Line will be operated by three-car trains initially and will be expanded to four cars when ridership increases. Hyundai Rotem of South Korea is building 62 of these train sets for the Jurong Region Line. The Jurong Region Line will be equipped with Siemens Train guard Sirius Communications-based train control (CBTC), Automatic Train Control (ATC) system, Control guide Rail 9000 Automatic Train Supervision (ATS), and Track guard West race MK2 Computer-based interlocking (CBI) system. TBA will be the operator of the JRL line. Details About Other MRT Lines Earlier in April 2021, Thomson-East Coast Line Stage 2 (TEL2) stations have been handed over by LTA to rail operator SMRT. SMRT Trains is the leading operator of the MRT lines. Currently, SMRT is handling most of the MRT services in Singapore except the North-East Line and Downtown Line. The operator is working on multi-year rail renewal projects to improve rail reliability on the North-South and East-West MRT Lines. Commenting on the ongoing efforts by the company to improve rail operations and services, Seah Moon Ming (SMRT Chairman) said, “We are pushing ahead to complete most of the renewal works on the North-South and East-West Lines by 2020. Later this year, we will scale up pre-opening preparations for the Thomson-East Coast Line, which opens progressively from 2019. We are also participating actively in the Rapid Transit System Link project that will connect Singapore and Johor Bahru to benefit the people of Singapore and Malaysia.” Conclusion

  2. 24km-long JRL line is now scheduled to start operations in 2027. The new line will serve 60,000 more households to reach a station within a 10-minute walk. It will also shorten the travel time. Instead of one hour time that people spend now to reach the Nanyang Technological University (NTU) area from Choa Chu Kang, the JRL line will only take them 35 minutes. The JRL line will also help to reduce the burden on other MRT lines.
