  1. How public transportation in Singapore promotes social and economic mobility Singapore is a bustling metropolis with a thriving economy and a diverse population. One of the key factors that contributed to the city-state's success is its excellent public transportation system. Public transportation in Singapore is not just a means of getting from point A to point B; it also plays an important role in promoting social and economic mobility. Social Mobility Public transportation in Singapore provides access to employment, education, healthcare, and other essential services, which helps to promote social mobility. By providing affordable and convenient transportation options, individuals from all walks of life can access opportunities that would otherwise be out of reach. This is particularly important for low-income families and individuals who may not have access to private transportation. One example of how public transportation promotes social mobility is through the provision of affordable housing. The Housing and Development Board (HDB) provides affordable public housing to more than 80% of Singapore's population, and many of these housing estates are located near public transportation hubs. This means that residents can easily access employment opportunities and other essential services, even if they don't own a car or have access to other private transportation options. Another example of how public transportation promotes social mobility is through the provision of accessible transportation options for individuals with disabilities. Singapore's public transportation system is designed to be accessible to individuals with disabilities, with features such as wheelchair ramps and priority seating. This allows individuals with disabilities to travel independently and access employment, education, and other services, which can help to promote social mobility. SMRT Corporation, a leading transport operator in Singapore, launched Go-To SMRT, an initiative to better serve commuters and communities in the precinct of all SMRT stations in April 2021. This initiative encourages everyone to embrace SMRT-operated transport nodes as the place they turn to for their common needs such as way finding, first aid, and locating missing people. SMRT Chairman, Seah Moon Ming, said: “As a Public Transport Operator (PTO), we are responsible stewards of key public transport infrastructure. By integrating Environmental, Social and Governance (ESG) criteria into our businesses, operations, and services, we can create greater value for stakeholders, commuters, and communities. In essence, SMRT has committed to “Do Right, Do Good and Do Well”. SMRT Chairman further added: “SMRT’s mission of Moving People, Enhancing Lives drives our service delivery. By the end of 2022, all MRT stations and bus interchanges operated by us will be ready as Dementia Go-To Points. In recognition of our efforts to enhance public transport

  2. network inclusivity, Go-To SMRT received the UITP (L’Union Internationale des Transports Publics) Marketing Campaign Award in February 2022.” While Ngien Hoon Ping, SMRT CEO, commented that: “SMRT is the first public transport operator in Asia to deploy NaviLens, an application to aid visually impaired commuters in their navigation. Launched at Woodlands Integrated Transport Hub (WITH), the app reads out information such as general direction and current location when a user scans the coloured marker tag. NaviLens will be expanded to all SMRT-operated bus interchanges by the end of 2022.” Economic Mobility In addition to promoting social mobility, public transportation in Singapore also plays an important role in promoting economic mobility. By providing affordable and convenient transportation options, public transportation enables individuals to access employment opportunities that may be located far from their homes. One example of how public transportation promotes economic mobility is through the provision of transportation options for migrant workers. Singapore has a large population of migrant workers, many of whom work in the construction and service industries. These workers often live in dormitories located outside of the city center, and public transportation provides them with a convenient and affordable way to travel to and from work. Public transportation also plays a role in promoting economic mobility by reducing the cost of living for individuals and families. By providing affordable transportation options, public transportation enables individuals to live in more affordable areas and still access employment opportunities located in the city center. This can help to reduce the cost of housing and other essential expenses, allowing individuals and families to save money and improve their financial situation. Conclusion In conclusion, public transportation in Singapore plays a vital role in promoting social and economic mobility. By providing affordable and convenient transportation options, individuals from all walks of life can access employment, education, healthcare, and other essential services. This helps to promote social mobility by giving individuals the opportunity to improve their socio-economic status. Additionally, public transportation promotes economic mobility by reducing the cost of living and providing access to employment opportunities located far from individuals' homes. Overall, Singapore's public transportation system is a critical component of the city-state's success, and a model for other cities to follow.
