Bone and Head Injuries Fractures Simple (closed) fracture Occurs when broken bone doesn’t split apart or breaks skin. A crack in the bone can be seen on the x-ray. Compound (open) fracture Occurs when a bone breaks into separate pieces. This is usually the result of a hit or fall. Comminuted fracture Occurs when bone shatters. May occur in a car crash/ accident
Shin Splints and Stress Fractures • Shin Splints Result of tearing of the connective tissue between the tibula and fibula along the front of the shin bone. Leads to stress fractures that may take months to heal. • Stress Fractures Tiny cracks along bone that are virtually undetectable by x-ray. Stress Fractures are very painful and take months to heal. • Causes Going from small to large amounts of physical activity without taking rests. Using improper footwear or worn out shoes on a hard surface while doing jumping and running execises.
Using Equipment Safely • Custodians sweep and mop the floor for maximum traction and to reduce the risk of slips and falls. • Follow 5 simple rules to make their job easier and your experience easier in the gym. • Follow 5 rules on the field to ensure it’s playable for you and the community.
Safety In the Gym • Never consume soft drinks/food and don’t chew gum. • Recycle all water bottles you bring. • Don’t use the Gym as a shortcut to other classes • Don’t be in the Gym unsupervised • Listen to all the rules the teacher says and help to clean up after class
Safety On the Field • Check the field for litter and report broken glass to the teacher. • Wear appropriate footwear such as cleats. • Don’t be distracted by friends on the stands • Clean up waste and litter if it’s yours • Look for irregularities in the filed like holes and report them to your teacher.
