The DES Learning Community Let’s Pump it Up!
“Action without reflection is meaningless activity. Reflection without action is mere academia.” Peter Reason, 1998
“Mere” • Mere in British English refers to a lake that is broad in relation to its depth
Academia • Academia, Acadème, or the Academy are collective terms for the community of students and scholars engaged in higher education and research.
The Professional Learning Community “If there is anything that research community agrees upon, it is this: The right kind of continuous, structured collaboration improves the quality of teaching and pays big, often immediate, dividends in student learning and professional morale in virtually any setting.” DuFour and Eaker, 2005
Colleagues should learn to prod each other toward growth and development: • Action orientation • Promoting experimentation • Outcomes focus • Value on results, not intentions
Reflective practitioners must find structured opportunities to consider their own experiences and corresponding theories of action, but sometimes they require a gentle nudge (or even a sharp elbow) from colleagues to consider alternative theories and frameworks.
Such reflective activities encourage all members of a learning community to see how their decisions and actions are based on theories that can (and should) be adapted and adjusted continually as new information and understanding emerge.
Active listeners • Refrain from delving into their own similar quandaries • Offer clarification • Question and probe • Bring out depth • Expose motivations and intentions • Push for elaboration
