The Center for Excellence in Home Care Practice and Education A Collaboration between The Visiting Nurse Association of Boston The William F. Connell School of Nursing at Boston College Adele Pike RN, EdD, Director
Identified needs • For both populations • Core materials (syllabi, Agency policies and procedures, mandatory professional materials) • Patient teaching materials • Virtual communication/consultation with faculty and home care nurse experts • For Community Health Nursing Students, full texts and videos (for assignments) • For VNA of Boston clinicians, resources for current evidence-based practices and teaching tools
Why a web-based technology? • Goal of the Center: to use technology to advance the care of patients recovering from acute illness or managing chronic illnesses in their homes • Student demand: Evaluations from Community Health Nursing Students requested more online assignments • Scalability: NU 261- Community Health Clinical Lab – has 8 sections using sites all over the greater Boston area
Opportunities • VNAB converted to an Electronic Medical Record in 2004-2005; all clinicians now have Lap Top Computers • IDES Faculty Summer Workshop program

Using the Site • At CSON NU 260- Community Health Theory NU 261 –Community Health Clinical Lab NU 407- Masters Entry Program • At VNA of Boston Mandatory Competency Education Policy and Procedure Access Document Delivery Video Resources
Meeting the Goal: in the classroom and beyond • Allowed clinical faculty to share resources more easily and efficiently • Allowed more time for in class discussion in community health courses • Increased excitement about Community Health and Home Care among CSON students
Meeting the Goal: in the clinical setting • Increased satisfaction among VNA of Boston staff using e-learning • Increased awareness and growing use of evidence-based practices among both students and clinicians -fall prevention -medication management among elderly -management of shortness of breath -wound care
Future Plans • Updates to existing areas • Further integration of the site into NU 261 • Incorporating e-learning into VNA of Boston Orientation Program • Patient Teaching Tools (created and/or identified by BCCSON students) • Virtual Expert Consultation
