Why DON’T we back up? • Organization • Requires an understanding of the file system • Files saved everywhere = back up entire computer • “My Documents” ends up as a repository for ALL personal files and not just “documents”
Why DON’T we back up? • Other Reasons • No simple short introduction to the topic • Terminology and jargon confusing • Choosing storage options overwhelming
There are only two types of hard drives-the ones that have failed and the ones that will.

Back Up – When? How Often? • Online back up is automatic • You can schedule a time 1 • 1xMonth – 1x every quarter • 5 hours or less a week = weekly basis • Home Computer • 10 or more hours a week = daily • Office Computer
Passwords • Regular basis – Every 30-90 days • DO NOT use the same password everywhere • DO NOT allow your passwords to be automatically saved and stored • “Forgot Your Password” links
Weak Passwords • Words found in dictionary – any language • Names of spouse, children or pets • Repetitions of numbers or Phone numbers • Anniversary and/ Birth dates
Weak Passwords • Nicknames, Cartoon Characters • Job Titles, Department names or job functions • Addresses (Richmond VA 23228) • Name of operating system or software packages.
Strong Passwords • Commonly 8 – 14 characters • May include special characters #, $, % • A mix of upper and lower case letters • A mix of both numbers and letters
