Today, we will: Discuss the logistics of High School Academics • Graduation Requirements • Importance of Student Behaviors • Bell Schedules Learn how to sign up for classes on SPAN • How does my child sign up for classes? • When does he/she have to have it finished? • What classes can he/she take?

  3. Future Ready Core The Future-Ready Core will help ensure that students graduate with the academic foundation they need for success in the global economy. It is the NEW Course of Study developed to provide a strong academic foundation so that students are prepared and have many options when they graduate from high school whether they go to college or to work. The main idea is that students graduate. . .

  4. Graduation Requirements 1. Earn a total of 26 credits. Pass the EOC in Common Core I, Biology, and English II.

  8. Is Foreign Language… To graduate High School? To attend a UNC college? No. Yes… at least 2 years of the same language. Tip! 9th graders should not take a foreign language their Freshman Year unless they have taken it in Middle School.(exception = students attending Enloe who want to take 4 years of a language.)

  10. What will my child’s schedule look like?

  11. Attendance 2 absences on a block schedule is like missing 4 days of learning. WCPSS policy dictates a student absent for more than 10 days in a semester class or 20 days in a yearlong class can be assigned a grade of “FF” indicating failure due to excessive absences.This includes both excused and unexcused absences.

  13. High School Course registration on SPAN Student SPAN accounts are required for High School Registration. Students may use these accounts for the remainder of this year to check grades, attendance, and discipline.

High School Registration Folder Contents • Parent Letter with specific instructions to follow • Student SPAN directions and Student SPAN password • YOUR School’s Course options • WCPSS 4 sample year plan based on your plans for after high school • All information Ms. Barbour has received regarding special programs, auditions, etc. for your school.

SPAN Registration span.wcpss.net Option #1 Register @ Home • Use STUDENT SPAN ACCOUNT • Feb. 25 – March 7 • Students will finalize schedule from home and print out 2 copies: 1.one to keep 2.one for Ms. Barbour Option 2- Register with Ms. Barbour • Students will sign up for an appointment in Student Services (deadline 2/27) • Students will finalize schedule at school, print out 2 copies: 1.one to keep. 2;one goes home, is signed byparent, and returned to Ms. Barbour.

Data-Driven Core Class Recommendations. • 8th grade teachers were provided High School Rubrics which included guidelines for all core • subject areas. • * EOG scores • * Grades • Students may select core classes different than what was recommended. • *Parent and Student must sign a waiver and submit it to the High School. • * Students who opt to register for classes with Ms. Barbour will not be allowed to • deviate from their teacher’s recommendation unless the parent contacts Ms. Barbour.
