Definition Guskey (2000) defines professional development as “those processes and activities designed to enhance the professional knowledge, skills, and attitudes of educators so that they might, in turn, improve the learning of students.”
Issues and concerns • Concerns about content, delivery, and intensity • Ideas promoted may not be valued by teachers • May not receive the learning and support needed to successfully implement into classroom practices • Lack of necessary resources • Insufficient feedback & follow-up • Multiple initiatives at once can make the new learning seem fragmented and contradictory • In many cases, districts spend less than 3% of their budget on PD – however, the Learning First Alliance (2000) suggests 80 hours or more per year needed in literacy PD.
