Examples for Dream Big Project Instructions from the Planning part of the process: • To use PowerPoint: • 1. Start with an empty page and add shapes using the "auto shapes" button at the bottom of the page. Stick to basic shapes that you know how to find the area for such as square, rectangle, parallelogram, rhombus and triangle. • 2. You can group your shapes by shift-clicking on all the shapes, and then clicking on the "draw" button at the bottom and choosing "group." • 3. Use "text box" from the menu at the bottom to write your dimensions (these are the measurements of the base, sides or height). REMEMBER - Base is perpendicular to the height, so you must have a perpendicular line on triangles and parallelograms. • NOW, find the total area and perimeter of your design by the end of class the first day. Be sure to divide your total square feet by nine to find the approximate square yards. Record your work and answers in your PowerPoint.
Example 1 A= bh 7 * 12 = 84 sq ft A= bh 8 * 8 = 64 sq ft A = ½ bh 7 * 8 * ½ = 28 sq ft Total: 84 + 64 + 28 = 176 sq. ft. Convert to sq yd 176/9 ≈ 19.5 sq. yd. P= add ALL sides 7 + 12 + 8 + 8 + 8 + 11 4/12 + 12 = 66 1/3 ft round to next whole number = 67 feet 11’ 4” 7 ft 12 ft 8 ft 8 ft
6 ft 14 ft 10 ft 3 ft A = 1/2 bh 6 * 3 * ½ = 9 sq ft A = bh 3 * 10 = 30 sq ft A = bh 14 * 6 = 84 sq ft Total: 9 + 30 + 84 = 123 sq ft Convert to square yards: 123/9 = 13.666 Round to the next whole = 14 sq yd P = add ALL sides 14 + 6 8/12 + 6 + 10 + 3 + 10 + 14 = 63 2/3 ft round to next whole number = 64 Example 2 6’ 8”
Example 3 A = ½ bh 5 * 18 * ½ = 45 A = bh 3 * 3 = 9 A = bh 18 * 12 = 216 Total: 45 + 9 + 216 = 270 sq ft Convert to square yards 270/9 = 30 sq yd P = add ALL sides 3 + 3 + 21 + 12 + 10 4/12 + 10 4/12 = 59 2/3 Round to the next whole number = 60 10’ 4” 10’ 4” 5 ft 12 ft 3 ft 3 ft 21 ft
