Access Officer - Disability Act Section 26 (2) – Access Officers: Public bodies must ‘authorise’ at least one staff member to act as an ‘Access Officer’ from whom people with disabilities can avail of assistance and guidance.
Appointing an Access Officer Key Considerations: The Job: the duties and responsibilities. The Person: knowledge, skills, abilities and key competencies required to perform the job. Training: disability awareness, accessibility auditing, etc.. Resources: budget, staff, etc. Complaints received to date under the Disability Act.
Access Officer – Role To provide or arrange for and co-ordinate the provision of assistance and guidance to people with disabilities in accessing services provided by the organisation and generally to act as a point of contact for people with disabilities wishing to access such services.
Access Officer – Main Duties To develop, support, coordinate and monitor the implementation of an access programme, including: • An audit • Provision of support and expert advice • Arrangements to respond to and deal with requests for assistance • Training for staff • Provision of information in an accessible format • Advise senior management if not in compliance withthe Disability Act 2005 • Recommend actions to improve the accessibility
Access Officer – Other duties Other duties may include the following: • Ongoing consultation with relevant bodies • Logging and evaluating responses to requests and queries • Advising on training needs as appropriate • Liaising with Access Officers and Inquiry Officers • Promoting awareness of his/her role and contact details to management, staff and customers e.g. on the website
Access Officer – Skills and competencies • A strong focus on quality customer service • Disability awareness • Adopt a proactive approach • Effective problem solving, analytical and writing skills • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills • Planning and organisational skills • Knowledge of the principles and issues relating to accessing services and supporting the development of integrated services
