Less Than Full-time Training & GP Returner Programme Dr Kevin Hill Deputy Postgraduate Dean – GP East Midlands Healthcare Workforce Deanery
Less than Full-Time Training EAST MIDLANDS DEANERY SUPPORTS THOSE DOCTORS WHO FOR WELL-FOUNDED REASONS WISH TO TRAIN ON A LESS THAN FULL-TIME BASIS ELIGIBILITY • Caring for a dependent child • Caring for a ill / disabled partner, relative or other dependent • Disability or ill health
EU Legislation EU Directive 1993/16/EEC EU Directive 2005/36/EC Training should not be qualitatively different from that of a full-timer Usually 50-80%
Principle of ‘pro rata’ • Normal full-time working week = 10 sessions (40 hrs) • 7 Clinical sessions • 3 Educational sessions 1 Half-day release 1 Practice delivered education (equivalent) 1 Independent learning • Example LTFT 60% = 6 sessions (24 hrs) • 4.2 Clinical sessions • 1.8 Educational sessions • 0.6 Half-day release • 0.6 Practice delivered education (equivalent) • 0.6 Independent learning
The Working Week A balance between • GP StR personal arrangements • Practice room availability / GP Trainer hours • GP StR educational needs Childcare arrangement should be arranged around work requirements not vice versa
GP Returner Programme GP Returners • Qualified GPs who have previously completed training • Out of practice for more than TWO years • 6 months full-time (9 sessions) or part-time equivalent • Employed by practice (as with registrar) • Entry knowledge test and exit MRCGP Applied Knowledge Test
