Contact Information • Professor: David Schamma • Email: wsunsac@yahoo.com (please do not send messages through e-class) • Office Hours: Wednesday 11:00 Thursday 11:00 • International Lounge Hour: Wednesday 12:00 PLEASE DO NOT CALL MY CELL PHONE UNLESS IT IS ABSOLUTELY NECESSARY I will be having full days of office hours dedicated to Sophomore Writing throughout the semester and will let you know when I will be doing so.
Course Materials • First Steps in Academic Writing- Level 2, Anne Hogue • Graded Reader 1: Martin Luther King, Coleen Degnan-Veness • Graded Reader 2: The Call of the Wild, Jack London • Graded Reader 3: The Scarlet Letter, Nathaniel Hawthorne
Grade Breakdown • Attendance 10% • Participation 10% • Homework 20% • Quizzes 15% • Midterm/Final 30% • In-Class Writing 10% • TOEIC 5%
Attendance • Attendance will be worth 10% of your grade. • If you are absent 4 times you will fail this class. • If you are over 15 minutes late, you will be marked absent. • Students who miss class are still responsible for the assignments given. • Students with an excused absence will still lose participation points for the day missed. • Please refer to the attendance policy in your course packet in regards to excuse notes
Participation • Participation will be worth 10% of your grade. This is not a conversation class (20%), however participation is still important. • Everyone will begin with 100% and will have points deducted for poor performance.* * talking on cell phone, texting, sleeping, extended restroom breaks, being rude or disrespectful, being absent without an excuse, coming to class late, not bringing necessary materials • Students will also lose participation for not having their homework
Homework • Homework is a major portion of your grade. It is worth 20%. • Expect to have homework every week. • 1st Drafts for the Midterm and Final will count towards your homework grade. • Homework comes in the form of drafts, outlines, research, completion of in-class assignments and preparing for quizzes through reading and answering discussion questions. • Homework assignments will build on each other. It is important to complete each step in the process in order to fully understand and participate in class. • Participation will be deducted for failure to do homework.
Quizzes • Quizzes are worth 15% of your grade. • Quizzes will be comprised of 10 multiple choice comprehension questions taken from the graded readers. • There will be 7* quizzes throughout the semester. *The Scarlet Letter is a Level 3 book and will have 3 quizzes. • Look at the quiz schedule in your course packet.
Exams • The Midterm and Final Exams are worth 30% (15% each) of your grade. • These exams come in the form of essays. • 1st Drafts for the Midterm and Final will count towards your homework grade. • 1st Drafts and Final Drafts will lose 5 points per day late.* *(ex. 1st draft 35 points total, 3 days late, best possible score would be 20 points.) TOEIC All students will have to take a TOEIC test in week 13. Students will receive 5% regardless of their score.Don’t be absent!
PLAGIARIZING Plagiarism will not be tolerated. You will receive a grade of F for your assignment if it is plagiarized and be asked to re-write it. Plagiarism is cheating and a waste of your professor's and your time. Do NOT do it. You will receive F for your final grade if you plagiarize Final Draft Essays.
