  2. Subject & Verb Must Agree Basic Rules: 1. If you have a singular subject, you must have a singular verb. 2. If you have a plural subject, you must have a plural verb.

  3. EXAMPLES: • Sallyplays on the swings. • Sally and Jeff play on the swings. ****If you notice, the singular subject needs a verb with a “s” at the end.

  4. My kids (swim/swims) in the lake behind the house. Larry (smell/smells) the flowers every time he passes the flower store. Jennifer Aniston and Angelina Jolie (is/are) famous celebrities. Joey is the strongest candidate; his looks, experience, and intelligence (invite/invites) voters to cast their ballots for him. Let’s try some together…

  5. When it gets tricky!!!!! • When people are referred to as one group, or one person in a group, you use a singular verb. EXAMPLE: The family (is/are) thoroughly excited to go to Florida over Winter Break. • Look out for these tricky group words: everyone, anybody, anyone, everybody, each, nobody, neither, either.

  6. Practice… • They (stands, stand) less than five feet tall. • It (inhabit, inhabits) the high plateaus of Tibet. • The big striped cats (prowls, prowl) in the Indian forests. • Agriculture, industry, and construction (limits, limit) the available space. • Everyone (lie, lies) at least once.
