ENVIRONMENTAL MANAGEMNT – PESTICIDES. • WE ARE CURRENTLY WORKING TO ACHIEVE THE MANY OBJECTIVES SET BY THE UK ACTION PROGRAMME FOR THE SUTSTAINABLE USE OF PESTICIDES. • ONE OF THE MAIN ACTION PROGRAMMES CONCERNS THE USE OF PESTICIDES IN AMENITY SITUATIONS SEE www.pesticides.gov.uk FOR LATEST DETAILS

  3. ENVIRONMENTAL MANAGEMNT – PESTICIDES. • WE HAVE SEEN THE RECENT VOTE IN THE EU PARLIAMENT ON THE 22ND OCTOBER ON THE “THEMATIC STRATEGY FOR THE SUSTAINABLE USE OF PESTICIDES”, AND IN PARTICULAR THE VOTE ON THE ALL IMPORTANT ARTICLE 11 THAT NOW STATES: -

  4. 11(a) the use of pesticides shall be prohibited or restricted to the minimum necessary in all areas used by the general public or by sensitive population groups , at least in residential areas, parks, public gardens, sports and recreation grounds, school grounds and playgrounds and in the vicinity of public healthcare facilities (clinics, hospitals, rehabilitation centres, health resorts, hospices) as well as in substantial no-spray zones including in fields around these areas, particularly, although not exclusively, to protect sensitive groups such as babies, children, pregnant women, the elderly and those with pre-existing medical conditions and who may be taking medication.

  5. THE VOLUNTARY INITIATIVE • A PACKAGE OF VOLUNTARY MEASURES BY INDUSTRY AIMED AT REDUCING THE USE OF PESTICIDES • THE NROSO SCHEME www.nroso.org.uk • THE NSTS SCHEME www.nsts.org.uk • WHY HAS OUR SECTOR NOT EMBRACED THESE IMPORTANT INITIATIVES IN GREATER NUMBERS?

  6. THE WATER FRAMEWORK DIRECTIVE • A COMPLETELY NEW, MORE HOLISTIC, APPROACH TO MANAGING POLLUTION TO SURFACE AND GROUNDWATERS THROUGHOUT THE UK. • ALREADY IN THE PROCESS OF FULL IMPLEMENTATION BY 2015.

  7. THE WATER FRAMEWORK DIRECTIVE • THIS WILL INTRODUCE THE RIVER BASIN MANAGEMENT PLANS SEE www.environment-agency.gov.uk FOR MORE DETAILS. • GOLF COURSES MUST NOW BEGIN TO LOOK AT THEIR POTENTIAL FOR POLLUTING SURFACE AND GROUNDWATERS.

  8. THE WATER FRAMEWORK DIRECTIVE • A PARTICULAR AREA OF CONCERN IS WHERE MACHINE AND PESTICIDE APPLICATOR WASHDOWN AREAS ARE NOT EA APPROVED WITH UNCONTROLLED DISHARGES GOING TO GROUNDWATERS. • EA HAS ENFORCEMENT POWERS ALREADY UNDER THE GROUNDWATER REGULATIONS.
