Learning Objectives • To create a line plot, box-and-whisker plot, and histogram for the same set of data using Excel and Geogebra • To discuss the advantages and disadvantages of each of these graphs • To interpret the results of the graphs including the measures of central tendency and variation R.   3. Two Things to Keep in Mind • The message of your graph, meaning what are you trying to say with your graph • The audience you are targeting, meaning who will get the message R. Valcin & J. Burns

  4. Let’s Look at Three Graphs • Line Plot • Box-and-whisker Plot also called box plot • Histogram R. Valcin & J. Burns

  5. Line Plot Shows frequency of data on a number line R. Valcin & J. Burns

  6. Advantages of Line Plot • Provides quick analysis of data • Shows range, minimum and maximum, gaps and clusters, and outliers easily • The exact values are retained R. Valcin & J. Burns

  7. Disadvantages of Line Plot • It is not visually appealing • It is best for set of less than 50 data • It needs small range R. Valcin & J. Burns

  8. Box-and-Whisker Plot • Shows the spread of data R. Valcin & J. Burns

  9. Advantages of Box Plot • It shows 5-point summary and outliers • It easily compares two or more data sets • It handles extremely large data sets easily R. Valcin & J. Burns

  10. Disadvantages of Box Plot • It’s not as visually appealing as other graphs • The exact values of data are not retained R. Valcin & J. Burns

  16. Advantages of Histogram • It is visually strong • It can compare to normal curve • Its vertical axis usually is a frequency count of items falling into each category R. Valcin & J. Burns

  17. Disadvantages of Histogram • One cannot read exact values because the data are grouped into categories • It’s more difficult to compare two data sets • It can only be used with continuous data R. Valcin & J. Burns
