  1. Effect of Aerated Greywater Irrigation on Soil Quality ChaandRajbhandari 14285477 July 1, 2013 Supervisor: Faisal Anwar

  2. BACKGROUND Greywater: Leftover water from washing machines, baths, hand basins Greywater reuse for irrigation has the potential to save 32% (89000L/year) of potable water in WA Increased use of greywater over a long time causes soil pollution and environmental degradation

  3. BACKGROUND Aim and Objectives To treat greywater through aeration to allow for a controlled irrigation using greywater, without degrading soil quality Aeration Ultraviolet absorption Nutrients Irrigated Soil Bulk Density Soil – water Characteristics Curve Porosity

  4. LABORATORY METHODOLOGY Aeration Treatment Soil Column Experiment

  5. LABORATORY METHODOLOGY

  6. TREATMENT RESULTS Ultraviolet Absorption

  7. NUTRIENT Ammonia Phosphorus

  8. IRRIGATED SOIL QUALITY Bulk Density Porosity

  9. IRRIGATED SOIL QUALITY Soil Characteristics Curve Raw Greywater Aerated Greywater

  10. IRRIGATED SOIL QUALITY Soil Characteristics Curve Raw Greywater Aerated Greywater

  11. PRACTICAL IMPLICATIONS • Aeration can easily be done anytime, anywhere • Domestic use – manual irrigation by bucketing • Stone Diffuser Cost: $9 max (for 10litres) • Large scale – greywater treatment plant • Disc Diffuser Cost: 1-2% of the total facility cost

  12. CONCLUSION Greywater Quality Effect of Aeration on • Acceptable greywater treatment can be achieved within 24 hours • Removes maximum level of organic matter Aeration Treatment Result in Increase in ammonia Decrease in phosphorus

  13. CONCLUSION Soil Quality Effect of Aeration on Aeration Treatment Increases Surface tension Porosity Water holding capacity

  14. RECOMMENDATIONS • Use aeration to regain lost soil quality • Aerated greywater helps to prevent drought • A simple addition to manual bucketing irrigation system • Aeration gives the freedom to use any detergent to produce laundry greywater • Use greywater within 24 hours of production

  15. SIGNIFICANCE • Introduction to simple and feasible on-site treatment method • Treats greywater at an affordable price • Promotes a sustainable and greener environment
