  1. Greywater

  2. Greywater 50% to 80% of residential waste water Greywater is all water from house except from toilets and garbage disposal • Kitchen • Garbage disposal is the exception • Shower • Sink • Washing machine

  3. Blackwater • Toilet • Garbage disposal

  4. Irrigate with Greywater Don’t store greywater • Use it within 24 hours before bacteria multiply. After 24 hours it is well on its way to becoming blackwater • Bacteria in it use up all the oxygen and the greywater becomes anaerobic and turns septic • More like blackwater - stinky and a health hazard

  5. Greywater Recycling Health Concerns • Health risks are often cited by regulators as reasons for requiring high-tech expensive systems although there are no recorded instances of greywater–transmitted illness in the US.

  6. Greywater Recycling Health Concerns • Permit hassles - Many jurisdictions in North America have no clear guidelines regarding greywater processing. With water shortages looming in the near future for many regions, this may change sooner than later. Health concerns are often cited as the reason for not allowing greywater recycling, although there has never been a documented case of somebody becoming sick as a result of exposure to greywater

  7. Greywater • Greywater must pass slowly through healthy topsoil for natural purification to occur

  8. Irrigate with Greywater Greywater have some blackwater-type components, including various pathogens • Dripped not sprayed • Avoid breathing

  9. Greywater • Microorganisms on plants - Don’t apply untreated greywater to above ground components: lawns, or fruits and vegetables that are eaten raw (eg. strawberries, lettuce, carrots)

  10. Greywater Drain To Mulch Basin

  11. Sloan AQUS Greywater System • Sink water filtered to flush toilet • Save 2-person homes around 5000 gallons of fresh water a year
