Zinc Fingers By Jeffrey Mah Biotechnology 2009-2010
Definition: • A type of small protein with 20-30 amino acids • Bonded to a zinc ion • Play essential roles • in DNA recognition
Found in: • Thousands of other proteins • Plants • Animals • BUT not bacteria
Function/Regulation: • The expression of genes • Assembly of viruses • Reverse transcription • Nucleic acid recognition • Stabilizes and solidifies DNA and RNA
Structure: • Main structure: • 1 tetrahedron • - 2 Cysteines • - 2 Histidines • - 1 zinc ion
Structure: The other 15-25 amino acids all face more-or-less outwards, and can be used for various functional tasks
Significance: • Tiny protein that helps with DNA related work • Researchers are currently trying to design artificial zinc fingers with different specificities
