Background of the NOAA • Founded: Officially 1970, but based off of the Survey of the Coast which was established in 1807. • Improve life through science, and keeping citizens informed about the environment they live in. • 33% of America’s gross domestic products are affected by the products and services of the NOAA
The Challenge To create a modern community/infrastructure that promotes the fundamental ideas of the NOAA while empowering and educating the visitors about environmental issues.
The Solution! • Built multiple islands featuring interactive exhibits on SL using new technology. • Users can experience actual environmental issues through the SL platform.
Why 3D? • Cheaper and more cost effective modern tools • Made an investment in human resources and time to create it, so they expect to see a rapid return in their investment • It will attract the next generation of scientist for employees • It will keep them up to date with other US federal agencies • Allows them to boots their main three adjectives: Manage, Create, and Serve.

The Lesson Learned • Investment needs to be well organized. • Staff needs to have easy access. • Capabilities to track effectiveness and usability. • Establish separate teams to manage different areas of the Islands. • Make the Islands appealing and interactive.
