WASTE MINIMIZATION • Fowlerville’s Policy • Lucas Varity Fowlerville will continue to seek ways to minimize or eliminate generated waste and to choose the best affordable management method. • We will make efforts to reduce waste by selecting alternative chemicals, better process control techniques, changing from hazardous to non-hazardous chemicals, basic “reduce the use” procedures and elimination of chemicals from processes by alternative technologies. • Waste Minimization Accomplishments • June 1997 - conversion of Helium supply from bottles to tube tanker - savings of $19,000/year • May 1997 - replaced Potassium Permanganate with non-hazardous Birm Resin • May 1997 - cycling rate change on 4 - 120 ton HVAC units - estimated savings of $17,000/year • January 1997 - replaced hazardous Mineral Spirits with non-hazardous Pensolv
WASTE MINIMIZATION • January 1997 - began recycling previously landfilled mixed aluminum chips; saved $630/load • October 1996 - elimination of Iridite process with the following results: • Reduced risk of chemical exposure • changed from LQG to SQG - no more inspections from MDEQ • no Biennial Report required • no further RCRA and HAZWOPER training • elimination of respirator program • reduction of long-term CERCLA liability • elimination of 6 hazardous chemicals - savings 0f $5000/year • elimination of TCLP analysis - savings of $1600/year • transport/disposal cost savings of $10,000/year • elimination of Chemical Tech position - savings of $40,000/year for a minimum total savings of $71,000/year Spring 1995 - reuse of Isopropyl Alcohol and spindle oil resulting in a 50% reduction in raw chemical and waste disposal cost
WASTE MINIMIZATION • March 1995 - Installed 25 HP compressor as holiday , etc. replacement for 500 HP unit - savings of $400/24 hour day • January 1995 - replacement of flammable cleaner Sil Clean with aqueous cleaner • Installing dry cooler to run in place of chillers in winter to ease burden on compressors - savings of $20,000/year • MICHIGAN DEPT. OF ENVIRONMENTAL QUALITY • P2 Revue - see handout • CLEAN CORPORATE CITIZEN • Voluntary • Participants receive public recognition • Faster review of permit applications • Expanded waiver for construction and operation during permit review • Plant-wide applicability limits (PALS) for increased operational flexibility
WASTE MINIMIZATION • Successful applicants must show performance in 3 areas: • environmental management • pollution prevention • consistent compliance with environmental regulations • Affiliated (future) programs - facilities with a current C3 designation will qualify for these new programs as soon as they become available • surface and groundwater • storage tanks
