  1. Paragraph Writing GRADE 7

  2. BASIC PARTS • TOPIC SENTENCE • THE SUBJECT • THE FOCUS • THE BODY • THE CLOSING SENTENCE

  3. TOPIC SENTCENCE • A paragraph begins with a topic sentence: a paragraph that tells the reader what the paragraph is about. • A topic sentence has two parts: the subject and the focus • The Subject: The subject of a topic sentence has to be specific or small enough to explain in one paragraph. You couldn’t write a paragraph on “the history of baseball”—it would be too long. But you could write a paragraph on “yesterday’s softball game”—it’s more specific. • The Focus: You need more than a subject to write a topic sentence. You also need a focus. A focus is usually a feeling or an attitude about a subject . It lets the reader know what you are going to say about a subject. • Example: In yesterday’s softball game (subject) the Eagles pounded the Hawks (focus).

  4. The Body • The middle of the paragraph is called the body. • It includes the sentence between the topic sentence and the closing sentence. • These sentences must give the reader all the information needed to understand the topic. • Below are sentences that could follow the topic sentence. • Example: When the Eagle batted, Tim started off with a double. Jamie batted next and hit a homerun. Hawks scored two runs in the third inning to tie the score. After Sarah hit a grand slam for the Eagles in the next inning, the Hawks never scored again.

  5. The Closing Sentence • A paragraph ends with a closing sentence. • This sentence may sum up the information in the paragraph, or tell what it means. • Example: Thanks to Sarah’s grand slam, the Eagles won by four runs.

  6. Sample Paragraph • Example:In yesterday’s softball game (subject) the Eagles pounded the Hawks (focus). When the Eagle batted, Tim started off with a double. Jamie batted next and hit a homerun. Hawks scored two runs in the third inning to tie the score. After Sarah hit a grand slam for the Eagles in the next inning, the Hawks never scored again. Thanks to Sarah’s grand slam, the Eagles won by four runs.
