Compassion Ministries • up to 150 homeless individuals in Central Texas on any given day • women and children are the fastest growing segment of the homeless population in America • the average age of today’s homeless? 11 years old.
Who are the homeless we serve? • Divorced, abandoned or suddenly single mothers • Who struggle to provide shelter, food, and basic needs for their children
Who are the homeless we serve? • Who experience • a lost job, • an unexpected health crisis, • or desertion
Three areas of volunteer need: • Outreach Assistance • Hope House Residential Shelter • Compassion Ministries Community Center
Outreach Assistance • Twice a week the following are distributed: • food • clothing, and • hygiene items • to anyonewho comes to our door • Volunteer Opportunity: • assistance in organizing donations • distributing donatings • Time Required: Very Flexible
Outreach Assistance • How can your civic and religious organization help? • We depend on community groups to donate these items. • Call us and we can help with suggestions! Monthly birthday celebrations for the children
Hope House Residential Shelter Opened in summer 2002, Hope House is the ONLY transitional homeless shelter in Central Texas.
Hope House Residential Shelter • Provides 12 apartments for families • Two apartments for up to 8 single females • Serves 50 families/individuals a year with • Approximately 100 children ranging from infancy to 17 • Access to legal assistance, parenting, literacy and health care classes through local programs
Volunteering at Hope House… Volunteer Opportunities/ Time Required: • Tutoring/flexible • Transportation/flexible • Computer lab/weekly • Childcare/weekly Children learn computer skills
Volunteering at Hope House… • Moving crew/task oriented • Apartment preparation/task oriented • Birthday celebrations (monthly) Monthly birthday celebrations for the children
Community Center • Funded solely by community grants • The Center houses: • the executive offices, • Co-Partner Skills Counseling program, • board meetings, • celebrations/events, • distribution site for outreach assistance.
Community Center Volunteer Opportunity/ Time Required • Co-Partners (mentors)/weekly • celebrations, events/flexible • bulk mailings/flexible Co-Partners meet as a team with the residents each week; training provided

With so many needs, where do I begin? Tell us if you’d like to work: one day a week bi-monthly or “on call” We’ll customize your volunteering time to fit your needs.
