Define line and surface profile tolerances. • Apply profile tolerances to define allowable variation within a limited zone on a feature or all of a feature. • Apply profile tolerances to extend all around the profile shown in a drawing view. • Complete profile tolerance specifications to achieve any of the possible levels of control. • Sketch the tolerance zone created by profile tolerance specifications.
Identify profile tolerances as the means for specifying allowable variation for conical surface form, orientation, and location. • Draw a composite profile tolerance specification.
Profile Specification • Line profile • Surface profile • Same feature control frame format • Different symbols • No diameter symbol for the tolerance • Applied RFS
Line Profile • Control single line elements on a feature • Each element is independent of all others • Control is only parallel to the profile to which the tolerance is applied
Surface Profile • Control all elements on a feature • When applied to one surface on a feature of size, the size tolerance also affects the surface requirements • Simplest level of control, controls form only
Limits of Application • Unless specified, applicable to entire surface • All around profile • All over profile • Defined limit
All Around Application • Symbol is similar to welding all around • Only applies to the feature as seen in toleranced view
All Over Application • Applies to all features of a part • May apply additional tolerances
Profile Directions • Bidirectional profile tolerance • Centered on true profile • Unequally distributed profile tolerance • Unidirectional profile tolerance applied to more material • Unidirectional tolerance applied to less material • Unequal disposed tolerance applied to allow more or less material
Control of Form Only • Other tolerances must establish location and orientation • Profile tolerance must not contain datum feature reference
Control of Form, Orientation, Location • Surface is located by basic dimensions • Datum references included
Coplanarity, Orientation, and Location • All contained in one tolerance • Profile tolerances control location, orientation, and coplanarity if the features are: • Form defined by basic dimensions • Location defined with a basic dimension • Datum references are shown
Composite Profile Tolerances • Form tolerances tighter than location or orientation tolerances • Datum references in first segment constrain translational and rotational degrees of freedom • Second segment constrains only rotational
Composite Profile for Pattern of Features • Multiple features that form a single pattern • First segment: pattern-locating tolerance zone framework • Second segment: defines feature-relating tolerance zone framework
