DID YOU KNOW??????A typical US family uses more than $2600 in home energy each year?You can save as much as 10% on your heating and cooling bill by reducing the air leaks in your home?Your DVD player, computer, and radio still use energy even when you are not using them?Compact Fluorescent Light Bulbs (those new funny looking ones) use 2/3rd less energy and last up to 10 times longer.If you switch your whole house to these bulbs you could save $80.00 per year.

Housing Stock 2000 Census: Housing units: 12,305 Pre 1970: 92% Single family: 80% Home owners: 66% Who Lives Here Residents: 37,418 People/poverty: 27% Children/poverty: 35% How Income is Spent HUD Data: 52% pay 30% + of income for housing MI Gap Study: Low-income pay 17–42% of income for home energy Opinions of GNI Residents THAW Consumer Impact Survey (For 48205) Reported: 48% Energy costs had a major impact on budget 62% Utility bill is a major or significant problem 63% Have accumulated energy bill problems 13% Plan to move due to energy cost in home 84% Would attend free/low cost energy conservation or weatherization classes Only 13% rate home insulation as excellent

  14. Community Goal “Families have all of the resources and support necessary to make their children successful in life.” Strategy Area Increase awareness of and access to energy related community resources to reduce the impact of energy bills on household budgets.

  15. Short Term 2007 Reduce stress of energy bills by increasing awareness of community resources. Long Term 2007-2008 Provide increased community energy resources and education opportunities to families to empower them to take control of their energy bills and provide a safe, comfortable, and energy efficient environment for their children.

IMPLEMENTATION STRATEGIES To address priorities, we will implement the following strategies: Increase partnerships to coordinate access to energy assistance and weatherization resources Develop a community calendar and contact database for outreach coordination Develop a Speakers Bureau & support materials to increase resource awareness Develop and present educational workshops on energy related issues such as weatherization, conservation, home maintenance and energy bill management for children and parents Help design Osborn Energy Smart Model Program with THAW, DTE Energy & The Skillman Foundation Recruit participants for Energy Smart model program

RESOURCES To accomplish our priorities, we will use the following resources: THAW Osborn Office DTE Technical and Support Assistance U of M Technical Assistance Community Development Organizations WARM Training Center GNI Osborn Committees Residents Other Community Partners Best Practice Research on Other Education Programs DVDs and Information packets Osborn Website Energy Smart Program Resources Influence & Resources of The Skillman Foundation and others

  18. PARTICIPATION In order to address our priorities, we will reach and involve the following people: Homeowners - Renters - Landlords - Local Government Educators - School Age Children - Agency Staff Faith Based Institutions - DTE Energy The Heat and Warmth Fund - United Way 2-1-1 Detroit Department of Human Services Michigan Department of Human Services WARM Training Center - The Skillman Foundation Detroit Community Initiative - Other Funders Nortown Community Development - THAW Service Sites Resident Groups

  19. OUTCOMES These strategies will lead to the following changes in 1-3 years: Households who reduce energy use will have more resources for children Children will be more successful in school due to improved and stabilized home conditions Better coordination of programs and services as a result of data gathered during outreach Homes will be safer and better maintained due to weatherization and home maintenance education. Increase in partnerships will result in increased access to energy assistance & weatherization services Data gathered will be shared with key stakeholders to influence public and private policy related to energy rates, energy assistance & weatherization programs
