  2. E-Waste Topics of Importance What exactly is e-waste? The sensitive nature of e-waste. Stored data laws and regulations. EPA & State DEP Response to e-waste. PA DEP e-waste permitting. The de-manufacture and recycle process. Putting it all together, GREEN & SECURE!

  3. What exactly is e-waste?

  4. E-Waste Items All types of computers and accessories. Cell, smart, and home phones. Answering machines, tapes and accessories. Office equipment (faxes, printers, & copiers). Digital Cameras & associated storage devices. TV’s, DVR’s, cable boxes, & video equipment. Audio equipment and accessories. Navigation devices. All other electronic devices & storage media.

  5. Two Main Aspects of E-Waste • Recycling and/or Reuse • Data Security

  6. Two Main Aspects of E-Waste • Keeping hazardous materials found in electronics from disposal into landfills. • Insuring all electronic data storage devices and media are cleaned.

  7. Hazardous Materials Inside a PC

  8. Data Security • Insuring all data storage devices and media in all electronics are completely sanitized. • Insuring all data sanitation is fully documented and auditable.

  9. E-Waste Generators • Homes & Residences. • Commercial Businesses. • Professional Offices. • Financial Institutions. • Health Care Industry. • Large Manufacturing Industry. • Utilities & Public Services. • Local, State, & Federal Government.

  10. The sensitive nature of e-waste.

  11. Electronic Data Storage Contains critical personal, financial, legal, technical, operational, and classified information.

  12. Almost every sector of society has a stake in secure data destruction. • Financial Industry • Government Agencies • Legal Profession • Utilities and Public Services • Educational Institutions • Health Care Industry • Insurance Industry

  13. Stored Data Laws and Regulations

  14. Related Laws and Regulations • HIPAA – Health Care Portability & Accountability Act • Gramm-Leach-Bliley Act – Financial Services Modernization Act of 1999 • FERC CIP Standards – Utility Industry Critical Cyber Assets • DoD 5220.22-M – Department of Defense Standards

  15. EPA & State DEP Response to E-Waste

  16. The EPA has no laws or regulations regarding e-waste. Each state must determine it’s own e-waste laws and regulations.

  17. In PA, electronic waste is considered municipal waste for residential and commercial generators and residual waste for manufactures.

  18. In Pa, residual waste generators that produce more then 2,200 lbs of waste monthly must report the output to the PA DEP.

  19. PA DEP E-Waste Permitting

  20. E-Waste De-manufacturing & Disposal in Pennsylvania General Permit WMGR081

  21. There have been 21 companies permitted to de-manufacture e-waste in PA between 2002 and 2010.

  22. All of the companies listed on the PA DEP website that were issued Permit WMGR081 indicate that they will refurbish electronic waste products.

  23. The basic flaw in the e-waste de-manufacture & disposal business in PA is that Permit WMGR081 allows for the reuse and resale of whole electronic equipment which drives profits and determines service pricing.

  24. The De-Manufacture and Recycle Process

  25. E-Waste is Stored on Pallets

  26. E-Waste Waiting for Processing

  27. Incoming E-Waste is Weighed and Outgoing Components are Weighed

  28. Copy Machine Being De-Manufactured

  29. De-Manufactured Components

  30. Light Scrap Metal for Recycling

  31. Recovered Power Supplies

  32. Recovered Circuit Boards

  33. A Hard Drive Before Destruction

  34. Hard Drive in 20 Ton Press

  35. Hard Drive Positioned for Destruction of Platters

  36. Fatal Destruction of Hard drive

  37. Physically Destroyed Hard Drives

  38. Putting it All Together, GREEN & SECURE

  39. Introducing a new concept for insuring the most completely secure and thoroughly GREEN method of e-waste disposal. Kiss2

  40. Kiss Principle Keep It Simple Stupid

  41. E-Waste Kiss Principle Killing It Securely Sanitizes

  42. The Kiss2 Formula Kiss2 = (Keep It Simple Stupid) x (Killing It Securely Sanitizes) The Result of applying this formula equals Complete, Thorough, Secure, &GREEN E-Waste Disposal
