Location and Date • The 23rd CODATA International Conference and the 28th General Assembly will be held in Taipei: • Conference: Oct 28-31 • General Assembly: Nov 1-2 • The conference venue is Academia Sinica, a government research institution with a campus at the outskirt of Taipei City that can be reached by public transportation.

Local Organization Committee • The local organization committee (LOC) has been formed by CODATA Taipei in collaboration with Research Center for Information Technology Innovation at Academia Sinica, with some funding from the National Science Council. • Photos from the 2009 Symposium courtesy of Tyng-Ruey Chuang, chair of the LOC

Scientific Program Committee • Conference theme: Open Data and Information for a Changing Planet • Scientific program committee is chaired by Prof. Ray Harris (Department of Geography, University College London) and is currently being formed. • Abstract submissions will be handled by an web-based system (easychair.org) to allow for a streamlined submission and review process. • Conference website is in the works.

Scientific Topics • Initial list of suggested scientific topics: • Data and Information for a Planet Under Pressure • e-Science and e-Science Networks • Information Science and Computational informatics • Data Mining and Knowledge Management • Interoperability and Data Integration • Earth and Environmental Data • Biological Science, Medical and Health Data • Physical Science Data • Social Science Data and Digital Humanity • Open Access; Public Sector Information;Legal and Policy Issues • Web Data and Linked Data

Program Information • Submission categories: • Session and panel proposals • Oral presentations • Poster presentations • Young scientists program • Plans to encourage young scientists, especially in the Asia Pacific region, to attend the conference by offsetting some travel and accommodation costs • CODATA Prize award • Participants to be identified by city

Travel Information • Daily flights from US (east and west coasts) to Taipei (Taoyuan International Airport, TPE) by major airlines. • 30-45 min taxi/bus ride from the airport to Taipei City center; 20-30 min subway/bus ride from City center to the conference site. • Multiple choices of accommodation: • On campus: Academia Sinica (cheap but nice) • Near-by: City Lake Hotel (3 subway stops away) • City center: The Howard Plaza Hotel Taipei (affordable) • Free wifi at the conference venue and hotels

CODATA Welcomes BRDI andWDS Participation • Participation in Scientific Program Committee • Organization of sessions, demos, training workshops, other activities • Task group meetings and coordination • Coordination with partners and initiatives, e.g., the ICSU Integrated Research on Disaster Risk (IRDR) program • Identification and support for young scientists • Strengthening of linkages with local scientific community • High-level outreach and communications, esp. across Asia
