Paper 22011 How to do the Evaluating Questions
By the end of this lesson; • Better understanding of how to do the Evaluating Questions in paper 2
Evaluating Questions • Always examine/study/read the C source first. • When carrying this out consider the following; • What is the title of the C source? • What is on the X/Y axis of the graph? • What is the survey about? • What does the bar graph/line graph/survey etc. show?
Question 1 • Use onlySource C1, C2 and Source A. • To what extent does the evidence support Ken Dorward? (3) • The question is asking how much does the evidence support Ken Dorward?
Q1 - Source C1 The source is about number of people on low income. The bar graph is showing a trend that the number of people on low income has not really changed much.
Q1 – Source C2 The source is about the value of the NMW. The bar graph is comparing NMW rates across a range of countries.
Read Source A and look for the following in one quote; The number of people on low incomes (C1) The value of the NMW (C2). Once you find the quote you should; Write the quote out in full Say what part of the quote is correct Say what part of the quote is incorrect. Source A
Q1 Model Answer • Ken Dorward states, “However, since 2007, the number of people on low incomes has risen while the relative value of the NMW in the UK is one of the lowest in the developed world.” (Write the quote out in full to get the mark). • Source C1 shows he is correct as the number of people on low incomes has started to rise from 2007. • But he is incorrect with regard to Source C2 as the relative value of the NMW in the UK is not one of the lowest in the developed world. The UK lies fourth behind France, Australia and the Netherlands.
Question 2 • Use onlySource C3 and Source A. • Why might Ken Dorward be accused of exaggeration? 2 • The question is asking why might Ken Dorward be accused of lying?
Q2 - Source C3 What is the survey about? What are people’s views on the NMW? Will it help the economy/wages?
Source B • Read Source B and look for the following in one quote; • Comment about the NMW in relation to support/rate/wages etc. • Once you find the quote you should; • Write the quote out in full • Say why the quote is exaggerated using evidence from the C source.
Q2 Model Answer • Ken Dorward states, “Few people believe that an £8 per hour NMW will push up wage rates in other areas of employment.” (Write the quote out in full to get the mark). • Ken exaggerates because Source C3 shows 40% of people surveyed believe a higher NMW will push up wages in other areas of employment. This is highest percentage response.
