  1. Colligative Properties

  2. Colligative Properties • Properties of a solution that differ from those of the pure solvent. • Freezing point • Boiling point • Vapor pressure • Depend on the concentration of particles; not the identity

  3. Colligative Properties • The addition of a solute will affect these properties in a number of ways. • Freezing point depression • Vapor pressure depression • Boiling point elevation • The more particles there are in a solution, the greater the effect will be

  4. Colligative Properties • Recall what happens when a solute dissolves. • Molecular- dissolves • Ionic- dissociates • When an ionic solute dissociates, there will always be a greater number of particles in solution. • When comparing an ionic and molecular solute with the same concentration, the ionic solute will always have the greater effect.

  5. Question • Which of the following solutes will have the greatest effect on the freezing/boiling point? • 1.0 m NaCl • 1.0 m C12H22O11 • 1.0 m CaCl2 • And why??

  6. Calculations • The freezing/boiling point can be determined using: Where is the difference in freezing/boiling pt, is the molality and is the constant. For water: Kf= 1.86 ⁰C/m Kb = 0.512 ⁰C/m

  7. Practice • What is the freezing point depression of a 0.5 m aqueous solution of NaCl? • What is the boiling point elevation of a 1.25 m aqueous solution of C12H22O11?
