  2. Chapter 4: Greece Athens and Sparta: two major city-states

  3. Sparta • Invaded Messenia - natives became helots (slaves) – most abused Greek population • Militaristic Spartans = prevent helot uprising

  4. Sparta • Helots worked land and Spartan masters went to military training = excellent army • Trained boys since age 7 • No cultural renaissance, no coinage (for equality), isolation • Women educated, exercised & outspoken King Leonidas of Sparta, 5th century B.C.E.

Athens • Large and populous territory • Divided citizens into four classes: • Top three classes could hold state offices, • lowest class – little/no property, not hold office, allowed to participate in Assembly meetings • Slaves – “living piece of property” – domestic servants; 1/3 of population

  6. Athens • 546 B.C.E. aristocrat tyrant Pisistratus took power • Monumental building projects (Temple of Athena) and religious festivals of plays, athletic, and poetic competitions • Overthrown in sixth century B.C.E.

  7. Athens • 460-450 B.C.E. Pericles moved towards democracy: Assembly, Council of 500, and People’s Council • People debated & made decisions – had free time because slaves did work • Women had no political rights
