  3. Major Differences Between High School and Middle School • Middle School is on a 7 by 2 Semester System. • High School will be on a 4 by 4 for Block System. • One must earn a set number of credits to promote to the next grade.

  4. Georgia High School Graduation Requirements Students graduating from a Georgia high school are REQUIRED to complete a minimum of 23 units comprised of the following: • 4 units of English • 4 units of Science • 4 units of Mathematics • 3 units of Social Studies • 1 unit of Health/Physical Education • 3 units of CTAE, Foreign Language and/or Fine Arts • 4 units of additional electives (Pathway)

  5. Electives Explained Foreign Language-students planning to enter or transfer to a four University System of Georgia Institution must take two units of the same foreign language. CTAE (Career, Technical and Agricultural Education)- CTAE courses ensure that you will graduate from high school with academic skills, hands-on experience in real work environments and intensive career guidance to succeed in college and/or employment. Fine Arts-the arts teach much about history through literature, visual arts, music, dance and drama. Learning through the arts often results in greater academic achievement and higher test scores.

  8. JROTC The Douglas County School System offer the JROTC for students interested in such. JROTC, if taken for four years, constitutes a pathway. This is an excellent choice for students interested in the military (enlisting right out of high school or attending one of the service academies).

  9. HIGH SCHOOL PATHWAYS The eleven CTAE course offerings on the previous slides comprise a pathway. The pathway can end in a certificate and/or skills that make students employable upon graduation.

  10. HIGH SCHOOL CREDITS NEEDED TO PROMOTE TO THE NEXT GRADE 9th Grade: 0-4 credits 10th Grade: 5-9 credits 11th Grade: 10-15 credits 12th Grade: 16+ credits

  11. REALITY II ALTHOUGH NOT EVERYONE IS COLLEGE BOUND, EVERYONE CAN BE SUCCESSFUL IF THEY ARE REALISTIC IN THEIR FUTURE PLANNING.

  12. WHAT IS THE CCI? The Douglas County College and Career Institute (CCI), located on the West Georgia Technical College campus, provides dual enrollment opportunities for students to earn both high school and technical college credit for courses taken at the CCI. Dual enrollment students develop both academic and occupational skills, while earning credits towards the completion of a technical certificate or diploma. CCI students gain technical skills that increase job prospects, whether the student is headed directly to the workforce or to college. For more information contact: mandy.johnson@douglas.k12.ga.us

  13. WHO CAN ATTEND CCI? Students interested in Graphic Arts and/or Video Production (high school credit only) may attend as early as 10th grade. There will be 44 9th grade slots per year. Students interested in dual enrollment (high school and college credit) must be a high school junior or senior, on track for graduation and at least 16 years old. See your high school counselor for testing requirements and the remaining admission criteria.

Georgia College 411 • New Law (Georgia House Bill 400) requires that ALL 8th grade students have an account with Georgia College 411 AND that all 8th grade student have a high school graduation plan on Georgia College 411. • If 8th graders are fairly certain what they want to do after high school, they can fill out the college plan as well.

TO OBTAIN THE REQUIRED GEORGIA COLLEGE 411 ACCOUNT • Log onto www.gacollege411.org • Select the appropriate grade level and click GO. • Enter your birthday, the click the FIND button to enter CHESTNUT LOG MIDDLE SCHOOL. • Create an account name and password. • Enter your personal information (Name, Street Address, Email Address and anticipated high school graduation year).

  16. FOR STUDENTS WHO FAIL TO REGISTER ON THE GEORGIA COLLEGE 411 WEBSITE All students who were at Chestnut Log for 7th grade have Georgia College 411 accounts. If you do not have a Georgia College 411 account please print your name of the GA College 411 sheet.

  18. THE BEYOND HIGH SCHOOL EXPERIENCE Eventually, every one of you will graduate from high school and enter the real world. The time is NOW to begin making an honest self assessment and to begin figuring out what it is you want to do after high school.
