Safety Rules • You need to always have you PPE • Due to the absence of smoke in TIG the electric arc can seem brighter than in shielded metal arc welding. • Although there is no smoke the brightness of the arc can cause surrounding air to break down and form ozone layer of poisonous gas. • Transparent curtains are also needed. • TIG runs on high frequency and due to this it can damage outside electronics. SET-UP • Make sure you have all you PPE on. • Proper ventilation • Visual Inspection • Connect Ground • Open cylinder fully • Position foot pedal • Sharpen Tungsten
SET-UP CONTINUED • Re-install Tungsten • Check regulator setting • Set the machine for welding mild steel
OPERATION • TIG is often considered the most difficult of all welding processes commonly used in industry. • Welders must maintain a short arc length. • Great care and skill are required to prevent contact between the electrode and the base metal.
OPERATION CONTINUED • It also requires two hands just like OFW • To strike an arc the base metal needs to be approximately 1/8” away. • Move torch in small circles to create the welding puddle.
OPERATION CONTINUED • While maintaining a constant separation you move the torch back slightly and tilt it backwards about 10 -15 degrees. • Add filler rod as needed
