What is lifestyle? • Definition “Lifestyles are patterns of (behavioural) choices from alternatives that are available to people according to their socio-economic circumstances and the ease with which they are able to choose certain ones over others” (WHO, 1986) • Topics relating to health - Diet, physical activity, obesity, smoking, alcohol, illicit drugs, sexual health, dental health Measuring lifestyle: methods and limitations
What is measured? • Behaviour patterns (surveys) - How much? How often? Alcohol, smoking, drug use, fruit/veg - Who? Age, sex, deprivation at residence of respondents • Outcome measures - Mortality or hospital admissions due to alcohol, smoking, drugs - Tooth decay - Teenage conception Measuring lifestyle: methods and limitations
Some gaps • Data at small area level - MSOA/USOA level • Robust primary care data - e.g. hypertension, obesity, diabetes - based on practice not residence • Self-reported survey data Measuring lifestyle: methods and limitations
Observatory lifestyle profile • Published early 2010 • Bilingual printed/online report (Wales and 7 health board profiles, reference document, web links) • Aims to provide a snapshot of local patterns • 5 months, 170 analyst days Measuring lifestyle: methods and limitations
Indicator selection • Availability of data - by LA/HB for comparison tables - others at Wales level • Input from practitioners and leads (where choice available) • Limited space Measuring lifestyle: methods and limitations
Traffic light table - health board areas Diet, physical activity, obesity Smoking Alcohol Illicit drugs Sexual health Dental health Measuring lifestyle: methods and limitations
Traffic light table - ABM Measuring lifestyle: methods and limitations
Deaths attributable to smoking • New estimate for Wales • Indicator in English Health Profiles (ERPHO) • Around 5,650 deaths per year in Wales (35+) (1,050 all ages from alcohol) • Attributable fractions for Wales calculated Measuring lifestyle: methods and limitations
Smoking-attributable fractions • Fractions for Wales calculated using - Relative risks from published studies (US data) - Prevalence of smokers and ex-smokers from 2007 WHS (Wales-level) • Fractions applied to number of deaths • Limitations (assumptions) Measuring lifestyle: methods and limitations
Dissemination • 350 printed copies sent out (100 CMO) • Intranet/internet news item • Email distribution • No press release • Press article: “Wales has most early sex, booze, drugs, HIV and clap” (NewsWales website, 1/02/2010) Measuring lifestyle: methods and limitations
