E163: Laser Acceleration at the NLCTA Eric Colby, ARDB For the E163 collaboration Safety Overview Committee Meeting Sept. 19, 2002
Summary of E163 Science Goals • Ultimate goal: demonstrate technical feasibility of direct laser acceleration • Proof-of-principle experiment (Q1 2005) • Construct optical prebuncher and conduct staging experiments (Q4 2005) • Test lithographically fabricated multicell accelerator structures (early 2006 on)
E163 Infrastructure • The NLCTA is the centerpiece • E163 adds: • An RF photoinjector replacing the NLCTA injector • A laser and laser room • An S-band rf system similar to a klystron gallery station • A shielding enclosure adjacent to and connected to the NLCTA enclosure • An extraction beamline leading out of the NLCTA into this enclosure • A control room outside ESB (move 225 to Northeast corner of ESB)
Some ES&H Issues • Radiation shielding enclosure suitable for: • 10 Hz x 70 MeV x 1 nC beam • Occupation when the NLCTA enclosure itself is secured and the NLCTA is operating • Multiple penetrations into the NLCTA shielding enclosure for laser light and electron beam • Earthquake Hazards • Radiation shielding enclosure, modification to block wall at east end of ESB • Klystron mounting
ES&H Issues, continued • Class IV laser (Ti:Sapphire+harmonics) • UV light up to 0.1 mJ per pulse present in both the laser room and NLCTA enclosure under normal operating conditions • IR light up to 1 mJ per pulse present in both the laser room and E163 shielding enclosure under normal operating conditions • Electrical hazards • HVPS, modulator, klystron • Rf radiation • Misc. power supplies for magnets, ion pumps, etc. • Chemicals, gases, etc. • Small quantities of cleaning solvents for vacuum preparation (IPA, acetone, etc.)
