Interval Inversions A “How-To” Guide
The question: • Identify the following interval, invert, then rename. ____________________________________________________________________________________________________
The Answer: • We will approach this question in four steps. • Identify the interval • Invert – Draw the top note • Invert – Draw the bottom note • Rename
Step One: Identify the Given Interval _______________________________________________________________________________________________ +3
Step Two: Invert.Draw the top note again, exactly as it appears in the question. ________________________________________________________________________________
Step Three: Draw the bottom note an octave higher than originally written(it will now be the top note!) ________________________________________________________________________________
Step Four: Rename the new interval Remember the following guidelines: • Both interval numbers add up to 9 • Major becomes minor • Augmented becomes diminished • Perfect stays perfect (hey, it’s perfect!) We started with a +3, therefore, the new interval is a -6
The Final Result: • Identify the following interval, _______________________________________________________________________________________________ +3
The Final Result: Identify the following interval, invert, _______________________________________________________________________________________________ +3 ________________________________________________________________________________
The Final Result: Identify the following interval, invert, and rename _______________________________________________________________________________________________ +3 ________________________________________________________________________________ • -6
