This proposal presents the development and physical trials of a full-size mock-up to test the layout of proposed service modules, focusing on the 3D cooling pipe layout. The trials include the use of a portable orbital welding system and assembly trials on a dummy detector to ensure proper functionality.

ATLAS ID Services Mock Up - Proposal Presented by John Hill UKATC Edinburgh
Following on from the past work of integrating the services within the cryostat the UK group have continued to develop layouts and ideas to the point of physical trials.... • This presentation will show: • Work has continued in developing the 3D cooling pipe layout within the ‘service modules’ • Construction of a full size mock up to trial layout of proposed service modules • Build on the development program of the portable orbital welding system and undertake ‘on (dummy) detector’ assembly trials UKATC Edinburgh
Previously statements have been made: • It would be nice to build service modules in a pre-fabricated standard way that: • Could be installed in one piece • Carried cooling, power and data (maybe) together • Could be “customised” to fit the correct segment either in situ, or in some custom dummy structure • Could be pre-tested and in the case of service failure could be removed and replaced Following this we started to look at detailing the routing, sector modularity and possible ways of construction UKATC Edinburgh
Building on previous work and following a number of layout iterations detailing concentrated on the 1/32nd modularity (Service Module) Arrangement of patch panel and services routing has been updated. This includes looking at some ideas for incorporating endcap and pixel services that could be modelled in the full size mock-up 32 Modularity UKATC Edinburgh
The latest 3D services layout shows repeatability of stave cooling pipes for a service module occurs after eight instances UKATC Edinburgh
Initial thoughts behind the ID mock up • Full size mock up begins to give us a ‘feel’ for what challenges lie ahead • Half section is preferred. We have the room available for this at RAL and mechanically it will be easier to construct than a quadrant. • Mock up will be built in three sections (slices), more manageable for transportation. • Initial studies will focus on barrel cooling arrangement and trials on pipe welding. • Half section gives us the ability to trial several ideas/arrangements in different areas. Mock Up Trials Orbital Welding System Swagelok M200 system. Trials and development of its use with stainless steel piping has been undertaken at Sheffield University. Series 5 head has been trialled for development purposes and is being used for the initial stages of mock-up construction UKATC Edinburgh
Photos show first trial welds using Swagelok orbital welding system undertaken on mock-up. Two interlink pipes were welded simulating the connection between a stave and service module cooling pipes UKATC Edinburgh
Latest Service Module layout Pipes mimic current layout, formed from available 1/8” Al/Alloy tubing. Dark/sleeved area indicates region of proposed weld. Current layout includes extra straight sections to allow for re-welds of link pipes connecting stave to main service module pipes UKATC Edinburgh
Next steps.... • Continue to develop the mock-up at RAL, incorporate current layout of barrel service modules and investigate integration with other services • Trial and use orbital weld head for stave-to-service module connection. Verify space requirements for weld head and prep equipment • Incorporate and develop service ducts, develop current ideas on cooling manifolds and model for full size mock-up • Endcap model and pixel services could be incorporated into mock up model when details arise... Swagelok 4H orbital weld head is smaller in size UKATC Edinburgh
