The World’s Biggest Settlements • Cities are the largest • They spread out from a central historic core into open space and agricultural land • Growing quickly • Cities change the land and water ecosystems • Use a lot of resources and produce a lot of waste • Almost 50% of people in developing countries live in cities Key Ideas

  4. Linear • Sometimes called strings • Consists of groups of houses or villages that form a long line • It can be straight (along roads/railways) or wavy (along rivers, lakes, or through valleys) Shapes of Settlement Patterns

  6. Scattered • Sometimes called dispersed • Usually seen in agricultural regions, especially in North America • Each house sits alone with other outbuildings • Pieces of land are separate from the neighbours’ land Shapes of Settlement Patterns
