Background Ageing of European population • Increase in number of people with dementia from 10 million to 14 million in next 20 years • Decrease in younger, working population EU faces a future with more people with dementia and relatively less professional carers to support
Background Dementia care • Approximately 66% of the people with dementia live at home • Support from informal (family) and professional carers • This number is expected to rise • Preference is to stay in own environment as long as possible • Aim of EU health policies, since this is a cheaper solution than admission to long term care
General aim Aim STAR:To improve the quality of care for people with dementia across Europe, by developing, providing and evaluating an open access online training in six European languages Target group:Everyone caring for a person with dementia, relatives, temporary staff, newly employed social care staff, staff with different language backgrounds Countries:ES, GB, IT, MT, NL, RO, SE

Results Analysis of existing training material Main conclusions: • 63% formal carers, 27% informal carers • 79% face-to-face delivery, 10% online • Online delivery highest in UK and the Netherlands • Large variation in course content and duration
