SUTTA AUR BAARISH The first time I fell in love with smoking in the rain was on a trip to the hills with my college mates. As a non-smoker, I usually kept away from my friends when they used to indulge in a smoke after class or during parties. But this particular trip was special. As we drove through the hills and reached our guesthouse, we were all knackered. The monsoon rains didn’t help the cause either, making the drive even more treacherous and the weather very nippy. Once we were done settling down, we set off on a hike to a spot from where one could see the vast expanse of the city below us. We took along a steaming thermos of chai, some makhana to munch on and our rain boots, as we began the hour’s long journey by foot. Tired from the sludges and rough terrain we had to tread past, we finally reached the spot and the sight was magnificent. The clouds were threatening to open up, but at the same time, there was an air of calmness and peace. We left the city and our stress behind us and settled down comfortably under a tree, lest it were to rain. After a couple of cups of chai, my friends took out their cigarettes and went about their whole routine. By habit, they did not pass me the cigarette, but this time, I asked for it. The warmth of the smoke hitting my throat for the first time was something I can’t explain. And as if it were divine intervention, it began to rain and I wasn’t sure how to stop it from getting extinguished. That’s when, my friends showed me a technique which I make use of till date. Reverse the cigarette to protect the burn, using the palm as a tent over it and bend the wrist inward slightly to also protect the barrel from direct hits of rain droplets As we experience yet another monsoon, albeit from the confines of our homes, that night of sutta aur baarish is something that I’ll hold on to until I can recreate it with my buddies again.
