What Makes A Serial Killer • A serial killer is defined as an individual who has murdered 3or morepeople over a period of time greater than a month. • Most murders are based on psychological gratification. • Normally abused as a child. • Mean IQ of 113 • Most follow their crimes in the media. • Motives: • Visionary • Suffer from psychotic breaks with reality. • Mission-Oriented • “Rid the world” of people whom they think don’t belong. • Hedonistic • Kills for thrills or pleasure • Power/Control • Gain power over their victim
Adolescence February 28, 1960 - Present • He was the youngest of 6 children • Richard abused drugs, and had a candy addiction which led to him having decayed teeth and halitosis. • Richard started to worship Satan by age 18. • Richard’s cousin, Mike, was a Vietnam veteran and showed him pictures of the victims he raped and murdered which fascinated Richard. • Mike shot his wife in the face in front of Richard, which later on “encouraged” Richard to begin killing.
June 28, 1984 • Richard was breaking and entering into the home of Jennie Vincow and becoming frustrated for not finding any valuables worth stealing he brutally began to stab Ms. Vincow, ending her life by slitting her throat. Killing Ms. Vincow sexually aroused him, and before leaving he proceeded to have sex with her deceased body.
Arrest & Trial • On August 30, 1985 Richard was unaware of the arrest warrant out for him, so he proceeded to walk in a liquor store where a woman noticed his face from the news. He attempted to steal a car, but failed. An angry mob subdued him and began to beat him with metal rods. • At the trials he showed a pentagram that he had tattooed to the palm of his hand. • He began wearing sunglasses, in court, to appear mysterious. • After one of the jurors was murdered during his trial, he intentionally scared the other jurors.
Media Attention • At his preliminary hearing, he showed a pentagram that he had tattooed to the palm of his hand. • The newspapers considered him a celebrity. • Richard wanted the press and the state to know he was a “monster”.

Richard Ramirez didn’t have any signs of becoming a serial killer as a teenager/young adult. He smoked marijuana, and had a candy addiction, but he wasn’t abused and didn’t mutilate animals. He didn’t have a passion for death until his cousin showed him death up close by shooting his wife in the head.
What Type of Killer is Richard? • Richard Ramirez is a serial killer. • He started to kill because he was fascinated by death after he watched his cousin shot his wife in the face.
Is Richard Ramirez “Evil” ? • Evil is the violation of, or intent to violate, some moral code. Evil is usually seen as the dualistic opposite of good. • Richard Ramirez raped, sodomized, mutilated, and killed many people. • From the moral code,his actions would be considered as evil. • Richard never said he regretted killing and raping his victims, but from interviews I felt like he knew what he was doing was evil because he wanted to be seen as a monster.
Where is He Now? • Richard Ramirez is currently on Death Row at San Quentin State Prison in California. He is to be sentenced to death around his 71st birthday. He currently is 51. • The only thing Richard was concerned about was if there was going to be a book written about himself.
