What it was about… • World Fair’s were a trend of the Industrial Revolution • Also known as the “Gilded Age” • Gild: putting a thin layer of gold on the outside of an object in order to make it appear to be made of gold. • Fair was a place to show off your ingenuity, creativity and muscle. • Also meant for culture, food innovations and display of other feats of society.
French host a Main Event- 1889 • By no means the first World Fair, as they started in the 1750’s. • But this was a major event for the Industrial Revolution, and a big success • Paris, France hosted a Fair in 1889 where they revealed the Eiffel Tower • This 1000 foot structure was the tallest in the world at the time.
Eiffel Tower revaled in 1889 1000 Feet
One-Upping the French • Fair was a place to show off your ingenuity, creativity and muscle. • 1892 was the 400th anniversary of Columbus discovering Americas (how Columbian Exposition became the name) • So obviously we had to beat the French Tower when Chicago hosted in 1893 • Americans decide to build an even larger structure, one that moves….
Other Attractions • Exhibits from other cultures/countries (China, Egypt etc.) set up. • Were stereotypical representations to enhance exotic feel • Machinery also on display. Tessla and Edison show off their electricity • Large artillery and giant manufacturing machines shown off (Era of bigness and bulkiness) Tessla’s Electric machine
What it meant for Chicago • Put Chicago on the map as a major city • Arts were on full display during the Fair • All of the buildings were white, so Chicago became the “White City” • Lit up at night too, first fair to really do this • Had a serial killer that used the fair to get his victims
