Observational Seat Belt Surveys • Statewide Results • Restraint Use by Vehicle Type • Restraint Use by Gender and Age
Restraint Use by Vehicle Type Observational Survey June 2004
Restraint Use by Gender and Age Observational Survey June 2004
Percentage of Unrestrained Occupant Fatalities* in Passenger Cars and Light Trucks, 1994-2003
Issues with Indiana’s Existing Laws • Occupants of pickup trucks are exempt from the Indiana primary seat belt law. • Children over the age of three are not required to be restrained in a pickup truck. • Occupants over the age of three are permitted to be transported in cargo areas and truck beds. • Young drivers covered by Indiana’s Graduated Driver Licensing law are not required to wear a safety belt in pickup trucks.
Indiana Fatalities by Restraint Use (data reports only on fatal crashes where restraint use was known)
Projected Indiana Fatalities (data reports only on fatal crashes where restraint use was known)
Estimated Pickup Occupant Fatalities and Lives Saved (data reports only on fatal crashes where restraint use was known)
Summary… • The lack of a primary occupant protection law cost Indiana 152 lives over the past 8 years. • The potential exists to reduce the number of pickup fatalities by 24 – 32 lives on an annual basis by increasing occupant protection usage rates to a level that are comparable with current passenger vehicle usage rates.
