Conflict in the Classroom • Student/Student Conflict • Student/Teacher Conflict • Teacher/Parent Conflict • Teacher/Teacher Conflict
Student/Student Conflict • Disagreement - students believe different things • Conceptual Conflict – information presented doesn’t fit with what a person already knows • Conflict of Interests – what one person wants, conflicts with want a different person wants
Student/Teacher Conflict • Teacher must have control of the classroom • Students challenge for control • Conflict usually is about a teacher asking the student to do something which they don’t want to do
Teacher/Parent Conflict • Parents feel that there is a disconnect between teacher and student • Teachers feel that Parents don’t educate their kids at home which lead to problems at school • Conflict usually is about what’s best for the student
Teacher/Teacher Conflict • Not common but it happens • Teachers disagree on how to do something • Usually is handled in an appropriate manner • Can lead to continued tension if not handled in the right manner
Resolving Conflict • Prevention • Listen! • Offer choices • Negotiation between the two parties • Mediation from an outside source
Be Prepared • The problem with Conflicts is that they can escalate quickly • Be ready for anything • Act quickly and Decisively
Activity • Separate into two groups • Read the situation • Think about what the conflict is, how it could have been avoided, and what needs to be done to end the conflict.
