Mean, Median, & Mode Cathy D. Denton Hedrick Elementary School, El Centro FINAL PRESENTATION CTAP 295 Teaching with Technology
Introduction • 5th grade class with 35 students • Hedrick Elementary School, El Centro, CA • CA Math Standards – Mean, Median, Mode 1.1 …concept of mean, median, mode… • Website: http://ctap295.ctaponline.org/~cdenton • Email: cdenton721@yahoo.com
Expectations: • Students will learn to compute mean, median, & mode with 80% accuracy. • Students will learn to use calculators. • Students will use the Accelerated Math program.
Outcomes: I learned the following: • PowerPoint • Excel • FrontPage • How to link pages • Uploading & downloading techniques • How to “surf” the web
Successes: • Students met California Mathematic Standards, 1.1 • All students can compute mean, median, & mode • Students learned how to use calculators
Shortcomings • Lack of internet sites on these standards • Having to rely on calculators and Accelerated Math (computerized program) for the technological connection
The Data Speaks for Itself • All students earned an overall grade of 80% or better.
Revisions • Continue searching for on-line activities for 5th grade students computing mean, median, & mode • Change introductory activity so that all students are working on the same data! • Data suggests that students understood the lesson – however, it is important for students to continue working on these skills so they won’t forget them
Summary To support student learning: • Teaching must be standards-based • Technology needs to be incorporated into our curriculum • CTAP 295 gave me some additional tools and resources to enable me to support students learning through standards and technology.
