  1. FACEBOOK UPDATE TO BOOST AUTHENTIC STORIES

  2. • Facebook was started in 2004 by a Harvard University student Mark Zuckerberg and today it is one of the most used social networking sites across the globe. With around a billion active users from across the world, it is no wonder Facebook is the number one social media site today.

  3. • Besides the individuals, a large number of business owners are also using Facebook to promote their business and news associated with it. It is the second most used social media platform, after LinkedIn, by the business owners.

  4. • Accordingly to a Buzzfeed report in November 2016, false news had more engagement than the real ones. One of the fake news on Facebook was that Ireland was accepting American “refugees” fleeing Trump.

  5. • According to the report, the highest performing fake election news had much higher engagement than the genuine news in the last three months of US election from authentic news sites such as New York Times, Washington Post, Huffington Post, NBC News, and others.

  6. • The twenty top performing fake posts generated around 8.7 million responses such as shares, reactions and comments. In contrast, the twenty best performing genuine news had only around 7.3 million interactions.

  7. • With the powerful impact ‘fake news’ are making, Facebook has finally introduced two new algorithms to ensure the genuine and authentic news get delivered on a timely manner and is further boosted.

  8. • The authenticity will be decided by many factors such as categorizing of pages, identity of the news owner, etc. The publishers who have posted spams and “fake” news in the past would be penalized by Facebook and will struggle to get likes, comments or even visibility on the platform.

  9. • Avoid hiding the posts on your page as Facebook considers that as one of the suspecting behaviors of the user. In such cases, it will consider content of your page to be unauthentic.

  10. • Real time signals such as the likes, comments, engagement on a post will help prove the content as original and important, thus not “fake.” In these cases, Facebook will help increase the visibility of the newsfeed.

  11. • The purpose of Facebook with the above-mentioned algorithms is to motivate the original publishers to continue sharing important news and demotivate the “fake” news publishers in doing so. It is essential they understand that although it might have worked until this point, but Facebook will no longer promote it.
