Since last IEFC Rende Steerenberg, CERN Switzerland • Meetings: • PS-CSAP#6 – 13 September 2012 • Joint-CSAP#1 – 04 October 2012 • PS-CSAP#7 – 01 November 2012 • PS-CSAP#8 – 05 December 2012 • PS-CSAP#9 – 31 January 2013 Please check the minutes for more details. • Co-Chairman joined the PS-CSAP: • Lau Gatignon (Thanks !) • Very complementary – experimental areas !

Main topics Rende Steerenberg, CERN Switzerland LINAC 2 visits PS - SIR – level 4 training Evacuation plans and signs Beam imminent warning PS smoke tests Fresh air intake …. In the next slides some of these will be treated in a bit more detail.
SIR – level 4 course implemented Rende Steerenberg, CERN Switzerland • Last time plans presented for deployment. • Online course has been implemented • Access zones implemented with transition period to avoid chaos. • PSB – PS – TT2 (SIR level 4 required) • LEIR and AD • 10 March 2013 • Only new access zone separation valid • SIR – Level 4 course obligatory
Evacuation plans & signs Rende Steerenberg, CERN Switzerland • Continued from previous meetings • Document with non-conformities made. • Evacuation plans are being drawn • TSOs (machine superintendents) should contact A. Russo (HSE) to discuss and start drawing for “their” machine. • Signs: • HSE has prepared a document with approved standard signs • The CERN stores will only have the approved standard signs • HSE and EN will go through the Ps complex machines at start of LS1 to put up sign conform the standards.
BIW & “zones borgnes” Rende Steerenberg, CERN Switzerland The colours of the flashing panels will be made coherent with those in the SPS North Area. The different “zones borgnes” will also be equipped with BIW. The participants of the PS-CSAP recommend not implementing a BIW system in the AD Hall.
PS smoke tests ? • Will a fire at the early stage be detected by the fire detection system ? Rende Steerenberg, CERN Switzerland Recommendation to leave the wooden panels in place was endorsed by IEFC. Smoke test was planned to decide if extra smoke detection needs to be installed.
PS trench smoke tests Second test h.17.55 First test h.17.25 Rende Steerenberg, CERN Switzerland
Smoke test outcome Rende Steerenberg, CERN Switzerland • Smoke flowed out from small gaps in sufficient quantity to be detected • Detection occurred after a reasonable time: between 8 and 9 minutes from the start of the test • Smoke flowed also in building 151 and in PS booster • Full report available at: • https://edms.cern.ch/document/1244321/1 • Recommendations: • No extra smoke detection system in trench. • Keep detection thresholds for present system identical to avoid increase of false alarms. • Increase leak tightness of PS (improvement foreseen for new ventilation system). • Conduct another smoke test with the new ventilation and smoke extraction system after LS1.
Fresh air intake for smoke extraction • There is room for possible improvement, allowing more flexibility for safe intervention by fire brigade. • Civil engineering work anticipates installation of blower at the center of the ring: • Flow rate: 30000 m3/h • Cost: ~ 30 kCHF Rende Steerenberg, CERN Switzerland • Intermediate report from working group. • The smoke extraction can work with the two air intakes.
Fire prevention needs for FB in PS Rende Steerenberg, CERN Switzerland
Fire prevention needs for FB in PS Rende Steerenberg, CERN Switzerland The PS-CSAP recommends these important safety improvements for safe intervention by the fire brigade in the PS tunnel
Fire prevention needs for FB in PS ( = ~80 kCHF) Safety Action Form is being prepared with a recommendation from HSE More official proposal (memorandum) is under preparation by the Fire Brigade Rende Steerenberg, CERN Switzerland

Production & approval process Rende Steerenberg, CERN Switzerland • Production of safety files: • Contributors provide a written part to the safety file editor on equipment, installations managed by his/her group. • The editor collect contributions and put them in a coherent way in the safety folder. • Safety approval process setup, discussed, approved and applied. • First EDMS approval round among all contributors once editor has completed safety file • Second EDMS approval round among group leaders concerned by the contributions. • Third and final EDMS approval round among PS-CSAP members. • In case the outcome of the third round is positive the PS-CSAP recommends approval to the complex manager.
Safety folders: Rende Steerenberg, CERN Switzerland The descriptive part of the ISOLDE safety folder has been approved by the complex manager. The descriptive part of the PS safety folder is close to approval. Demonstrative part for PS safety folder is well underway Safety folder for other zones such as AD, East, PSB, LINAC4, etc are being worked on.

1st large Joint -CSAP Rende Steerenberg, CERN Switzerland • Rotational Chairing of Joint-CSAP meetings. • Quality Assurance for Important Safety Elements • All EIS related components should be equipped with a sticker • Persons intervening should be trained. • Procedures should be put in place. • Safety Training for/during LS1 • Good ideas presented, but remained to be worked out. • Topic of upcoming Joint-CSAP. • Summary report of the Tripartite meetings and visits • Overview was given, no action from CSAP side required. • New evacuation training facility • The joint-CSAP endorses the benefit of such a training facility; especially as real life evacuation exercises are quite difficult to organize with the busy schedules of the different installations. • Standardization of safety sign across CERN

Summary of recommendations Rende Steerenberg, CERN Switzerland • Following smoke extraction tests: • No extra smoke detection system in trench. • Keep detection thresholds for present system identical to avoid increase of false alarms. • Increase leak tightness of PS (improvement foreseen for new ventilation system). • Conduct another smoke test with the new ventilation and smoke extraction system after LS1. • The PS-CSAP recommends important safety improvements for safe interventions by the fire brigade in the PS tunnel • Fire compartmentalisation by fire doors (~ 40 kCHF + ..) • Installation of dry risers (~ 80 kCHF) • Update fire detection system (to automatically close doors) being studied.
